  • Our FLC Spotlight of the Week is Dr. Miriam Konkel! ?? Dr. Konkel earned her M.D. from the Charité, Humboldt University, in December 2000. She completed her residency in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, focusing on Infectious Diseases, at prestigious institutions in Berlin, Germany. In 2005, she joined Louisiana State University as a postdoctoral researcher, later becoming an assistant professor for research. Dr. Konkel has been a part of Clemson University since January 2017, where she serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry. Dr. Konkel is a member of the Clemson University Center for Human Genetics, a CUSHR Scholar, and a core faculty member of the Biomedical Data Science and Informatics (BDSI) program. Her exceptional contributions to research earned her the University Research, Scholarship, and Artistic Achievement Award (URSAAA) in May 2018. Her research focuses on primate genomics, particularly genome-mobilome interactions and the evolution of mobile elements across primate lineages. Dr. Konkel is also pioneering efforts in cyberphysical genomics interfaces, developing innovative tools for analyzing large genomic datasets to enhance understanding and accessibility for diverse audiences.   • Our FLC Spotlight of the Week is Dr. Susan K. Duckett! ?? Dr. Duckett holds The Ernest L. Corley, Jr. Trustees Endowed Chair in the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at Clemson University. She earned her B.S. in Animal Science from Iowa State University and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University. Before joining Clemson, Dr. Duckett held faculty positions at the University of Idaho and the University of Georgia. Dr. Duckett’s research bridges ruminant nutrition and meat science to enhance lipid metabolism, fatty acid composition, and the palatability of animal products. Her current projects include exploring strategies to mitigate ergot alkaloid-induced vasoconstriction and studying methods to enhance intramuscular fat deposition in meat-producing animals. Dr. Duckett teaches and mentors students through a variety of courses, including: ?? AVS 4920 - Advanced Fetal Fescue Research Team (Undergraduate Research) ?? She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on science education in 2005 and her M.Ed. in Secondary Science Education in 2002, both from Clemson University. She also holds a B.A. in Chemistry from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (1998). With a passion for enhancing student learning, Dr. Nammouz's research focuses on applying research-based teaching methodologies to develop engaging science courses for nonscience majors. Her innovative approach connects scientific concepts to real-world applications, fostering a global perspective in the classroom. As a Global Learning Institute Faculty Fellow, she has championed Clemson University's International Virtual Exchange (IVE) initiatives, helping students make meaningful connections between their studies and the world.   • Clemson University continues to lead the way in experiential learning with innovative programs like the first-ever Engineering Expo for first-year students! #ClemsonExL Held on Dec. 5, the event welcomed?275 students?with the unique opportunity to connect with 80 industry professionals?from 19 companies from Northwest Arkansas to Northern Virginia. The expo offered a welcoming environment for first-year students to explore engineering careers early in their academic journey. “This event bridges the gap between industry and education,” said Jeff Neal, director of the Clemson Cooperative Education Program. “It’s all we hoped for and more!” With overwhelmingly positive feedback, Clemson’s Cooperative Education Program sets a new standard for preparing students for success.   • Abigail Poropatich ’25 grew up surrounded by aviation, with both parents working as commercial airline pilots. Inspired by her family’s legacy, she began flying at 17 and is now pursuing her private pilot license—but her career aspirations extend far beyond the cockpit. As a Clemson University senior double majoring in physics and computer science, Abigail combines her technical skills with her passion for flight. Last summer, she interned at Textron Aviation, contributing to U.S. Navy aircraft simulators and even flying real planes in her free time. After graduation this December, Abigail will join Deloitte Government and Public Services as a technology analyst while continuing to work toward a commercial pilot license. Professor Tugman brings a wealth of experience and passion to the classroom, inspiring curiosity and a commitment to health and wellness in her students. With an educational background that includes a Ph.D. in Engineering and Science Education from Clemson University (2023), an M.S. in Interdisciplinary Health Education/Nutrition/Exercise Science from the University of Utah (1998), and a B.S. in Human Nutrition from the University of Wyoming (1995), she bridges diverse disciplines to create impactful learning experiences. She teaches a range of courses in the Clemson University College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences, including HLTH 2020 (Introduction to Public Health), HLTH 2030 (Introduction to Healthcare), HLTH 2890 (Health and Human Disease), HLTH 3200 (Maintenance of Men’s Health), and HLTH 4150 (Obesity and Eating Disorders).
