Super excited about our latest publication from my PhD dissertation! In this paper, we investigated the microbial ecology in the first full-scale installation of CLEARAS' EcoRecover mixed-microalgal wastewater resource recovery facility. Key findings include: - Stable microalgal communities were positively correlated with key abiotic factors (e.g., system pH, alkalinity, and influent NH4+), and were supported by diverse bacterial communities. - Partial nitrification resulting from insufficient alkalinity and low pH caused NO2- accumulation, inhibiting microalgal growth and process performance. - Temporal dynamics of pests (zooplankton grazers, fungal parasites) followed host-specific dynamics and occurred during elevated summer temperatures after the loss of process performance. Thanks to Mahdi Hodaei, Elaine Hartnett, Benjamin Gincley, Farhan Khan, Ga-Yeong Kim, Ameet Pinto, and Ian Bradley for the collaboration. Special thanks to Jeremy Guest, Hannah Molitor, and the CLEARAS team for the continuous support. Also, thanks to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), U.S. Department of Energy for funding this work.
