Austin Williams, a PhD student in Materials Science at Carnegie Mellon University, hosted an insightful Prepared Mind Session for the Venture Fellows on his research into hydrogel and organogel soft materials. Key takeaways from his presentation: ?? Each sound processor costs ~$10K, yet current models are not waterproof or rain-safe. ??? While products like the iPhone are built to withstand dust and water, cochlear implants remain highly vulnerable. ?? Existing waterproofing options often sacrifice sound quality, muffling audio and limiting usability. Austin’s research into #hydrogel (commonly used in contact lenses) and organogel materials holds the potential to revolutionize cochlear implants. These materials allow sound to travel more easily while being resistant to water penetration. His work on reconfigurable circuits, featuring self-healing properties, shows immense promise for a future where hearing technology is not just functional but also resilient.
