Awesome real-world #NIL exposure for the students who aspire to work in sports at Penn State! More sports management programs are moving toward having NIL as a major component of their academic curriculum - some programs have even introduced dedicated NIL classes.

Yesterday, the Marketing 449 class had the pleasure of hosting Penn State Wide Receiver Liam Clifford, who shared his insights on life as a student-athlete and the world of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Liam began exploring NIL alongside his brother, Sean Clifford, which eventually led them to create Limitless NIL. Together, they successfully grew Limitless and ultimately sold it to a Philadelphia-based holding group, which has since expanded the company further. Now, Liam leverages his experience to help budding entrepreneurs, guiding them through growth and development while connecting them with valuable contacts he’s made along the way. As NIL continues to evolve, Liam emphasized its role in allowing athletes to showcase their personalities and stories. #BusinessofSport #NIL #Limitless #PennStateFootball #WeAre #SmealSportsBusiness

Good summary from Noah Henderson about the ripple effects of the less-discussed third major component of the House v. NCAA Settlement of scholarship limits ==> roster limits. Henderson does a great job of showcasing how the section of the settlement can be perceived as a positive (since scholarship limitations have been removed every athlete on the roster can receive up to a full scholarship which many Power conferences will be able to stomach) but at the potential expense of the walk-on. Key takeaway: "While teams still have flexibility in how many scholarships they allocate, the new structure strongly incentivizes schools to fully fund all roster spots with scholarship athletes, leaving little room for non-scholarship players. This shift effectively reduces the incentive to field walk-ons, as teams will likely prioritize fully funded rosters over maintaining non-scholarship spots. As a result, the traditional pathway for walk-ons is quickly disappearing, putting the very future of the walk-on athlete in jeopardy." #NIL #nameimagelikeness #collegesports #HouseVNCAA

Much of the discourse surrounding the House v. NCAA settlement and the sweeping changes coming to college sports in 2025 has centered around revenue sharing. In my opinion, not enough has been discussed about an addendum all schools must comply with if the choose to opt into the $22,000,000 annual rev-share allotment -- roster limits. One thing is certain, 2025 will likely mark the end of the walk on athlete as we know it... and many roster spots across all sports will be eliminated. My latest: https://lnkd.in/gMjJiATk

CleanKonnect conducted an analysis looking at the social media impact of athlete NIL posts by comparing likes and comments on Sponsored Posts vs. Traditional Posts. ?? Sponsored Post = any post in which the athlete is promoting a product or service ?? Traditional Post = any post that shows the athlete in their day-to-day live or playing their college sport The data showed a substantial drop in likes and comments when the athletes posted a Sponsored Post, to the tune of 31% fewer likes and 44% fewer comments on average. The trend was consistent across almost every athlete analyzed, regardless of the athlete's gender or sport played. There was one exception to the trend: Duke basketball freshman forward Cooper Flagg who saw only a small decrease in likes and an increase in comments on his Sponsored Posts, largely driven by the high quality production of his groundbreaking NIL deal with New Balance. The key takeaway for college athletes who want to ensure high levels of engagement on their social media posts: - Be thoughtful about how many Sponsored Posts you share compared to Traditional Posts. Too many sponsored posts in a row could lose buy-in from your followers. - If the partner brand is open to doing a collaborative post, you can pick up incremental likes, comments, and followers by being exposed to the brand's social audience. - When producing Sponsored Posts, try to make it look and feel like a Traditional Post in a way that adheres to the brand standards. Sponsored Posts that look like Traditional Posts can be a win for the athlete and the partner brand. Check out the visuals below for more information about the analysis and examples of the different post types.

Pete Nakos of On3 published a great summary outlining how former college athletes can now begin filing claims for their piece of the $2.8 billion the NCAA is set to pay in back damages. These back damages are one of the major components of the House v. NCAA settlement agreement, along with future revenue-sharing and roster limits. Check out this visuals below for a breakdown of how the headline $2.8B breaks down into different component parts along with a timeline of the key milestone dates culminating in when the first back damage payment will be remitted. Very cool to see Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship leaning into NIL education for: - student-athletes - influencers - students interested in the NIL business model with a specific focus on how to build a sustainable business in NIL, beyond just growing a social media presence.
