?? AI + robotics is the future of recycling ?? Rebecca Hu Thrams is revolutionizing waste management with AI-powered robots that sort recyclables faster, cleaner, and smarter than ever before. Her team at Glacier are on a mission to bring data-driven efficiency to the $100B+ circular economy. ?? Why Now? - China’s ban on waste imports exposed flaws in the U.S. recycling system. - AI & robotics are finally advanced enough to make automated sorting viable. - MRFs (Materials Recovery Facilities) are struggling with labor shortages and inefficiencies. ?? How It Works: - AI-powered cameras analyze recycling streams in real-time. - Robotic arms sort materials with precision and speed. - Data insights help brands like Amazon & Colgate optimize packaging for sustainability. ?? Big Opportunities Ahead: - Fully autonomous smart MRFs – AI-powered facilities that adjust in real-time. - Nationwide data networks to track & optimize recycling at scale. - Partnerships with brands & governments to improve packaging and compliance. ?? The Bottom Line: AI-driven recycling isn’t just reducing waste—it’s redefining the circular economy. The Future of Critical Minerals: A National Security & Energy Imperative? The world is scrambling for critical minerals, and Nicholaus Rohleder of Climate Commodities is investing in startups and projects that will reshape energy, AI, and defense. ?? The Challenge: - China controls 60-90% of critical mineral supply chains. - The U.S. lacks domestic refining & processing capabilities. - AI, EVs, and defense tech are driving skyrocketing demand for minerals like nickel, tungsten, gallium, and lithium. - The U.S. needs self-sufficiency but lacks skilled labor and infrastructure. ?? Where Are the Opportunities? 1?? Waste-to-Value Mining – Recycling and upcycling minerals from industrial waste to reduce dependency on volatile supply chains. 2?? Onshore Processing – Developing U.S.-based refining and processing to break China’s monopoly. 3?? AI & Defense Integration – Scaling mineral production for AI chips, EV batteries, and advanced defense systems. ?? Investment Is Shifting: - Smart money is moving toward waste-to-value startups that de-risk supply chains. - The U.S. government is likely to establish mineral stockpiles, similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. - Tariffs & reshoring efforts could force companies to bring production back to the U.S. ?? The Bottom Line: We’re in a new era of resource security—where critical minerals will define economic power, AI leadership, and military strength. ?? What do you think—should the U.S. go all-in on critical mineral independence? Drop your thoughts below! ?? Last week in Houston Somil and I interviewed THE expert in carbon capture projects. We were surprised by what we learned! Todd Bush, who has worked with oil & gas companies to decarbonize for over a decade, and who has also exited two companies he founded, is now working on Decarbonfuse. A daily newsletter tracking carbon capture projects. In our conversation last week, he spilled all the tea... - Who are funding these projects - What it takes to build a successful carbon capture project - When a project can really move forward - Where the projects are being built ... and - Why the future is still bright for ~most of the carbon capture industry If you're a founder or investor in this space, you're going to want to check out this conversation Check out the full episode now out on our Substack and wherever you get your podcasts (we left this one free to all) Link to show in the comments ?? #carboncapture #DAC #CCUS PS: if you're a founder or investor in the clean tech / climate tech (whatever we're calling it now) sectors, become a subscriber to CleanTechies to stay up-to-date on what's happening in this world. What a whirlwind two days in the booming clean tech hub of... Houston! Over the past two days, Somil Aggarwal and I have been making the rounds in the Houston clean tech ecosystem. Trevor Best gave us a tour the facilities at Syzygy Plasmonics (a chemical reactor powered by light. It's 30x more efficient than conventional reactors). We got to sign the wall (I think we are part of the team now) Moji Karimi and Dr. Tara Karimi showed us around the Cemvita Inc. lab spaces and taught us all about how nuances of how they're using microbes to make bio-oil out of waste streams, to then produce sustainable aviation fuel. Then Rawand Rasheed, PhD showed us how they are revolutionizing the HVAC space with Helix Earth. After that Energy Tech Nexus and Digital Wildcatters hosted us for a live podcast with Todd Bush on the topic of Carbon Capture and Upcycling. (cc: Jason Ethier, Nada Ahmed, Julie McLelland) Then this morning we toured the Gold H2 office and lab with Prabhdeep S. Sekhon and Brittany Pitlik to see how they are creating hydrogen from abandoned oil wells. And got to catch up with my good friend John who is one of the main reasons I ended up in NYC back in 2020 (what a G!) We really appreciate the hospitality of everyone and we look forward to returning in the future. Next stop, NYC (HMU if you're looking to connect) PS: if you've not already, check out the episodes we did with Trevor, Moji, and Jason & Nada.
