Meet Mary from our?#CleanSlate?PSA -?#ForTheRecord. Mary is a passionate advocate for?#secondchances, using her own journey from addiction and incarceration to inspire and support others. A former honor student who once studied abroad, her life took a detour at 17, leading to years of substance abuse and involvement with the justice system. Now over two years into her reentry, Mary serves as a case manager, Peer Coordinator, and Program Manager for social justice organizations in Connecticut, helping others rebuild their lives. Celebrating three years of sobriety and recent recognition as one of Connecticut's Top 100 Women of Color, Mary exemplifies the power of resilience and transformation. Imagine being permanently defined by a mistake you made years ago — a mistake you've since paid for, but one that still blocks your path to a stable job, housing or education. That’s the reality for an estimated?1.3 million Kentuckians, even though many have lived crime free for years. Too often, stigma overshadows the value, skills, and humanity of individuals with records. By changing the narrative and focusing on second chances, we create pathways for people to contribute fully to their families, communities, and workplaces. Leadership means recognizing the systems that perpetuate inequity and taking action to dismantle them.
