This week's #teachingthursday reflects on the ?????????? ???? ???????????????????? solar project developers face, as they compete with other companies and pro-fossil fuels interests. From the outset, it is important to acknowledge that solar start-ups, as newcomers in the market, face a distinct set of challenges as compared to existing businesses that seek to tap into the solar sector. This is what we understands at "??????????-???? ??????????" colloquially. We will dive into these costs in details later in next few posts. The challenges associated to scaling up and creating more solar projects construct another set of costs, in addition to start-up costs. Expanding the installed capacity should be seen as a whole, different struggle because what it takes to ?????????? pilot projects is usually not enough to work through the ?????????????????????? phase of the business. Scalability is crucial for business sustainability and long-term operations. This is what I see as "????????????-????-????????-???????? ??????????" pertaining to issues that top solar project developers are always considering at the back of their mind. Besides, a careful developer will know the various ways in which solar and other clean technology are positioned to disrupt the dominance of the fossil fuels industry. These efforts can also be costly for them in establishing a market niche, and I term these costs as "???????????????????? ??????????." We will dive into all three sets of costs soon. So, What's the HYPE about community-solar? As you may wonder.... #TeachingThursday #TTCS Today, Clean Mallard presents a monthly series on demystifying community solar development, providing more clarity for interested stakeholders to better align resources that may be poured into projects for the PEOPLE. Every Thursday, we will tackle an aspect of community solar development, in a manner that's accessible and critical. As #hurricanehelene and #hurricanemilton exposed the threats of climate change to our stable living that we often take for granted, let us step into a new and more hopeful world, where changes – in terms of solar generation – are not only possible but also practically underway. ^1 1. How and Why Community Solar is Different from Other Forms of Solar Facilities There are many barriers for residential end-users to host solar panels on their rooftop. In addition, utility-scale solar farms and gardens tend to be developed and owned by utilities, which may be a great addition to our total clean energy generation capacity. However, from an understanding of grid resilience and energy equity, it's worthy considering other forms of community solar development. Trying to understand how to more effectively build community owned community solar projects? ??????
Hi network, I’m overjoyed to let you know that I graduated from Reed College with a bachelor’s in Sociology and completed an independent qualitative research project, titled “Community Owned Community Solar in the United States: Emergence and Organizational Strategies for Success.” My research endeavors introduced an organizational lens into examining the burgeoning community solar market, explaining questions such as Why and How practitioners have been able to build alternative business models in the competitive community solar market? Importantly, How may these projects scale and contribute to the goals of #energydemocracy, accelerating our pace towards a just and #cleanenergy transition? Please feel so welcomed to read the abstract and introduction to my thesis, linked under the education section of my profile. Happy to hear any feedback or have discussion with you! I am forever grateful to be in this conversation with these pioneers in this field: Mason Rolph, Crystal Huang, Dan Orzech, Arielle Simmons, who gave me valuable access into understanding their organizations, their worlds, and their visions for our clean energy future. I also am indebted to the inspiring research by Eric Sippert, PhD, Gilbert Michaud, PhD, and Eric O′Shaughnessy, along with folks at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. They did the heavy lifting that is needed for people like me to understand community solar project development and potentials. This project hasn’t ended! I am super excited to be collaborating with Sachiko Graber and Cooperative Energy Futures on their forthcoming report. This opportunity to learn first-hand from community solar developers will teach me a lot of great and practical lessons, honing my skillsets. My recently-founded consulting practice, Clean Mallard LLC, is also a small, next step towards building up my aptitudes in working in the clean energy space. Lastly, I thank my dear friends and colleagues for supporting my journey at Reed and beyond. In my acknowledgment, I wrote “if someone can beat Reed thesis, they can beat anything in life.” I walk on and proceed with this thinking, and my hopes and dreams, in mind! Feel free to send me a direct message for any questions, suggestions, or what you are up to! I’m excited!
