As we look ahead to 2025, Clean & Green Philly (C&GP) is poised to leverage these advancements and contribute to this transformative field. Geospatial projects are revolutionizing how we approach planning, environmental conservation, and public health, by harnessing data-driven approaches to tackle localized issues, emphasizing targetted evidence-based decision-making. Clean & Green Philly aligns perfectly with this model, utilizing geospatial technology (GIS) to address vacant property challenges and improve Philadelphia's neighborhoods. Key components of geospatial initiatives include open-source tools, collaborative data collection, and advanced analytics. Examples of projects/resources: CHEER Project ?? https://lnkd.in/eW29E8fH The CHEER project University at Buffalo is making regional food system data more accessible through an interactive online GIS mapping dashboard, from production to food waste management. This community-driven initiative supports #FoodFutureWesternNewYork, allowing residents to submit "food system stories" and leveraging machine learning to analyze produce photos, creating a real-time image of food availability across the region. At Clean & Green Philly we are all about the data. Did you know #Philadelphia faces a unique challenge with about 10,000 vacant residential structures, which can pose safety hazards and contribute to neighborhood blight. 25% of these properties are high priority parcels in the 75th percentile at risk of gun-violence. ?? Big-picture, the city should consider the following strategies: ?? Create a Vacant Property Registry and Ordinance ?? Require property owners to secure, insure, and maintain their properties ?? Develop a system to assess property condition ? Allow residents to monitor the status of vacant properties ?? Implement minimum stabilization and security measures for all vacant structures (going beyond first-floor-only L&I response ?? ). ?? Strengthen enforcement of property owner accountability ?? Address priority vacant properties through targeted interventions As the city prepares its 2025-2026 budget, prioritizing these issues would be a crucial step toward creating a cleaner, safer, more vibrant, Philadelphia.

Trees as Infrastructure: Prioritizing a Greener, Safer, Philadelphia At Clean & Green Philly, we use tree canopy percentage at the parcel level as a key metric to identify priority parcels for neighborhood intervention. Why? Because tree canopy is more than shade—it’s a powerful indicator of equity, safety, and community well-being. Thats why we love this article by S?la E?ridere, written for the Alliance of European Mayors - Mayors of Europe describing the important work of TreesAI. Research shows that neighborhoods with more tree coverage experience cooler temperatures, better air quality, and even lower rates of gun violence. Yet, many of #Philadelphia’s underserved areas suffer from low canopy coverage, compounding systemic challenges. But here’s the issue, despite Philadelphia's great work to plant more trees:?trees are not yet understood as infrastructure in the public discourse. ?? Just like roads or bridges, trees provide essential services—managing stormwater, reducing energy costs, and fostering safer communities. Reframing trees as critical infrastructure would ensure they receive the investment and policy attention they deserve. At Clean & Green Philly, we’re committed to this shift. ???Big News in Civic Tech! The City of San Francisco has just launched a redesigned SF.gov, powered by?"Karl" the CMS?and?"Maya" the Design System. "Karl" is a Content Management System, SF’s new central website backend, is built on Wagtail, the open-source CMS. This brings SF into Python/Django community, which is a win-win for the City and emerging engineering talent. Karl named for SF’s infamous fog. ??? "Maya" an accessibility-focused design system, will be made available to agencies as a Gitbook-based library for websites and apps with React front-ends. Maya is named for Maya Angelou, an iconic San Franciscan, who once said “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” This quote resonates deeply with the principles of design and accessibility. ?? ?? Here in #Philadelphia, Clean & Green Philly a small non-profit, we share a similar mission—leveraging public data to provide residents with critical information about vacant properties and fostering transparency. A quick shoutout to PHL Innovation s own innovation efforts—there’s great work happening through programs like Phila.gov’s redesign and digital equity initiatives. But as we look ahead in 2025, we’d love to see a revival of the Vacant Property Indicator (VPI) model.
