Hunting down #methane leaks from oil and gas facilities in Romania, CATF’s Théophile Humann-Guilleminot and Mihai Stoica from 2Celsius show FRANCE 24 hidden methane emissions with their optical gas imaging camera. CATF has monitored +650 sites in Europe since 2021, uncovering and documenting methane leaks across the oil and gas network in Europe. Immediate reduction of methane pollution, including from these documented leaks, is the best strategy we have to reduce the rate of global warming right now. ?? International oil companies have committed to end “routine flaring” – a practice that releases #methane emissions into the air – by 2030. But this won’t be enough to slow the pace of global warming. CATF’s latest report finds that a focus on zero “routine flaring” is no longer sufficient. With only 30% of reported flaring from 10 major oil companies in 2022 listed as “routine,” 70% of flaring remains largely unabated – polluting the atmosphere and diminishing public health. To see real methane and flaring reductions, we need an effective combination of regulatory, financial, and economic levers alongside technical solutions and company leadership: https://lnkd.in/e5tXeXFJ

A new report from Clean Air Task Force and Acadia Center reveals that enhanced community engagement for clean energy infrastructure projects is critical to achieving New England’s 2050 decarbonization goals. The report highlights the opportunity to accelerate the region's clean energy progress by addressing local concerns and better equipping communities to meaningfully participate in siting and approval processes.? Drawing from prominent case studies around the region, the report also identifies promising options for developers, communities, and policymakers to improve project planning and engagement, helping reduce the risk of failures, legal challenges, and delays. Without comprehensive reforms to improve community engagement processes and modernize siting and permitting policies, the region’s clean energy transition risks significant delays and setbacks.?? "The climate challenge is a century long one, and you don’t hit pause when politicians push unpopular policies that would take us backwards." ? Post- U.S. election results, Giving Green highlights CATF’s long-term, global strategy that accounts for multiple levers of systems change, including policy, technology development, market shaping, building social license, and more.?https://lnkd.in/gpuTW3yx
A note to our community from Giving Green founder and executive director, Dr. Daniel Stein, a week after the US election: "In light of the US election results, we know many are concerned about what this means for the future of our climate. There is no denying that we have a tough four years ahead of us. At Giving Green, our work is rooted in the big picture. We understand that the road to climate mitigation and decarbonization is a long one with many ups and downs. In the face of setbacks, we will stay focused and keep moving in the right direction. We want to reassure our community that we have long been preparing for this moment. Our research and recommendations are guided by a long-term, global strategy that accounts for multiple levers of systems change. This includes policy—on an international, state, and federal level—as well as technology development, market shaping, building social license, and more. We have our work cut out for us, but we are up to the challenge. As are our Top Nonprofits, Giving Green Fund grantees, and the rest of the climate movement." ?? Interest in #nuclear energy has grown in tandem with concern about global warming – and that shift is apparent on the biggest climate stage, #COP29. An additional 6 countries signed on to a pledge to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050, and support from financial institutions and countries signal a broader recognition of nuclear energy as a key contributor to the global energy mix. We must now find innovative ways to enable its rapid, safe, and secure scale up –?addressing cost and regulatory obstacles.? https://lnkd.in/dF2nEwi8
