"Butter is terrible for your heart." "No. It's great for you!" It's hard to keep up with the latest evidence and associated cultural trends when it comes to #nutrition. Perhaps because the media often sensationalizes the latest studies, but mostly because we still don't fully understand how every food impacts our health (nor is it exactly the same for everyone). As a result, the messages we hear about what will make us healthy and what won't are confusing, often contradictory, and increasingly polarized. But one of the *biggest* problems with the US' current approach to nutrition is the focus on single ingredients or individual nutrients. Our approach doesn't match the nature of the issue. If we want to make America healthier, we must acknowledge the systemic nature of food's impact on health. What does that look like in practice? #Predictions season isn't just for the start of a new year... For National Nutrition Month, I'm sharing two nutrition-specific predictions. The first one is live today (link below), and it looks at how we might take a more systemic approach to nutrition, improving our collective health as a result. https://lnkd.in/ebPDCwwT Our food system affects all of us. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Brittany Ryan Zeev Neuwirth, MD

Why do schools struggle to rethink education? The answer lies in their value networks. This video, based on my talk at SXSW EDU last week, breaks it down.

What actually works to reduce kids’ sugar consumption? Public health messages often warn that sugar is bad for our teeth, and while that’s true, it’s not what makes parents stop buying sugary drinks for their kids. Ann-Somers Hogg's research dug deeper and found some surprising insights about what spurs parents to stop buying sugary drinks for kids: ? It’s not always about price—healthier choices were often cheaper ? It’s not about cavities—that warning doesn’t help change behavior because parents perceive cavities as fixable ? It is often about guilt—parents feel a deep responsibility for their kids' health and well-being and are motivated to eliminate their own guilty feelings ? It’s also about sugar’s effect on kids’ behavior—some parents even compared it to a drug This research doesn’t just highlight the problem—it gives parents, providers, and public health officials the words to talk about it and make, or support, healthier decisions. Choosing the right college can be a big decision, so how can you ensure it’s the right fit before committing? In his latest article, Michael Horn shares strategies for evaluating a college in advance to ensure it aligns with your priorities and goals. Drawing from his books "Job Moves" and "Choosing College," he highlights the "college petal-flower diagram," a tool that helps students assess institutions across seven key dimensions: purpose, people, geography, campus life, size, academics, and extracurricular activities. For many parents, cutting out sugary drinks isn’t just about health—it’s about feeling in control of their kids' well-being, and often about improving their kids’ behavior. Ann-Somers Hogg's latest research uncovered some unexpected insights: ?? Parents were surprised to find that non-sugary drinks could actually be less expensive than sugary ones? ?? The usual warnings about cavities didn’t change behavior—but parental guilt was often a driver for change ?? Some parents even compared sugary drinks to a drug-like addiction This research can help public health leaders, pediatricians, RDs, and families reframe the conversation around sugar. Watch the full video to learn more about what truly shifts parents’ behavior to improve kids’ health.
