    Fractional Head of Growth & Product Marketing

    Clay grew 10x YoY for the last 2 years. Bruno Estrella shared his super tactical playbook with us last night. Here are 5 key takeaways + how it can be directly applied to you: 1) Linkedin is, and remains, their biggest acquisition channel Don’t diversify your channels too soon. Focus on 1-2 channels that you can 10x growth on. How you crack your 10x channel is the fun part. 2) Attribution is sorta BS ??♀? People don’t buy software because of a single Google ad. It’s a combination of many things. Your ultimate goal should be frequency of impressions and and how well your messaging resonates. When it comes to attribution, use it for directional signals. Meaning, it’s a great tool for testing the success of a campaign, or if there is an emerging channel or tailwinds that you should start paying attention to. 3) PLG vs SLG PLG is great for awareness. This is the audience that will advocate for you at scale. You want to keep this word-of-mouth flywheel going because if you have any traction, WoM will always be the primary driver to your baseline growth rate. SLG/Enterprise is great for revenue retention rates, and seemingly negative churn rates. If you’re starting with PLG and want to go upmarket –?be careful not to completely abandon your PLG efforts too soon. It’s what drives market interest in your product, and will likely support your SLG motion. 4) Focus on engagement at the top of funnel Your top of funnel activity generates lots of important signals. Beyond the quantitative signals, there is gold in your ads' comments, reddit posts, YouTube video comments, and so on. You will see firsthand how people perceive your product, what they understand vs don’t understand, what excites them, what questions they have, etc.?These signals should all influence your marketing and drive your content strategy. 5) Influencer marketing Focus on making sure they truly understand the value of your product before they talk about it. And focus on decreasing their friction to create content. At Clay, they only worked with a few big influencers. They treated them like a sales prospect: asked who their targets were, built out a pipeline for them, enriched it. This worked so well that one of their influencers converted into an enterprise account. On decreasing friction, they leveraged programmatic tactics to do legwork for the influencer (eg. record the video for them) so all they need to do is 'fill in the blanks'. There were a lot more that were very specific to Clay's GTM. These were the five that I've found to be applicable to ANY early-stage PLG startup.     Found out that Clay — a tool that I remember as an awkward Airtable look-alike I tried 6 years ago — has transformed into a powerhouse GTM enrichment software that's growing 10x YoY since its relaunch in 2022 ?? I'm giving it another try this weekend! Yesterday, I went to a fireside chat where their growth marketing head Bruno Estrella dropped some interesting tidbits: 1. 50% of HubSpot revenue comes through implementation partners. Clay too, launched "Claygencies" program, where some are now making eight figures annually. 2. LinkedIn UGC is Clay's best performing channel. Specifically, content created by Claygencies for whom Clay reduces friction to generate content in creative ways. Like using AI to generate custom new feature walkthrough videos. 3. "Organic" isn't a thing; it's just a different utilization of marketing spend. Everything is paid for one way or another; speed is the variable that matters. 4. Despite difficult attribution (which doesn't matter anyway), out-of-home ads (billboards, subway) legitimize a startup cause consumers to perceive it as "they made it," so it may be a good investment early on.
