National Native American & Alaska Natives Heritage Month is dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the rich history, vibrant cultures, and enduring traditions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. This month is a poignant reminder of Indigenous Peoples' significant contributions, enriching the past, present, and future with their unique narratives. The influence of Native Americans & Alaska Natives is evident in various facets of American life, with 28 states and numerous cities, rivers, and lakes bearing names of Native origin. Native Americans and Alaska Natives are descendants of the original inhabitants of North, South, and Central America, and many continue to maintain strong tribal affiliations and community connections. According to data from the U.S. Census, the Native population increased from 5.2 million in 2010 to 7.1 million in 2020, with projections estimating they could reach 10.1 million by 2060. Throughout National Native American and Alaska Natives Heritage Month, diverse community gatherings, festivals, and events unfold in educational and governmental settings. These occasions provide invaluable opportunities for individuals and groups to learn about the historical and contemporary contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives across many fields, including education, the arts, literature, governance, sports, science, and technology. Participating in these observances fosters a greater understanding and appreciation of Indigenous people's enduring legacy and vital role in shaping the United States.
