As American Archives Month comes to an end, we’re celebrating one of the foundations of archival history: the creation of the record group system. This organizational approach groups federal records by the agency that created them, making it easier for archivists and researchers to access these valuable documents. In the 1930s, when the National Archives first began accepting records, there was no established method for sorting them. By 1940, the first Archivist, R.D.W. Connor, and a dedicated committee devised the record group system. Their approach of organizing records by the agency of origin has provided a lasting structure, allowing researchers to explore government history and the stories preserved within these archives. Despite its devastation, the Great Depression was also a remarkable period in leadership as President Roosevelt worked with #Congress to reform the #USA banking system, put Americans back to work, and restore trust in government. With signs of improvement, the #POTUS proudly said in 1938: “We in #America know that our own democratic institutions can be preserved and made to work. But in order to preserve them we need to act together, to meet the problems of the Nation boldly.” The Depression would end. That truth has not.

The National Archives in Washington, DC, has just released a major update to its Digital Preservation Framework, enhancing efforts to preserve digital records for future generations. This updated Framework, available on GitHub, offers guidance and risk assessments for digital file formats, addressing new risks that have emerged since its original release four years ago. The latest version makes the digital preservation process more user-friendly and transparent to the public. Evaluating over 700 digital file formats, this work is central to the National Archives' mission of making access happen and preserving our history. As we move toward fully electronic recordkeeping, this updated framework ensures that electronic records will endure for generations to come.
