Clarkson Law firm has filed a lawsuit against Florida Crystals and its parent company, Fanjul Corporation, for greenwashing and harming communities and the planet. The environmental advocacy attorneys at Clarkson are taking action on behalf of a class of Floridians to hold one of the largest sugar producers in the U.S. accountable for falsely claiming to be environmentally friendly—while continuing destructive preharvest burning that pollutes South Florida's air, worsens climate change, and puts lives at risk. This harmful practice spews toxic smoke into historically underserved Glades region communities, leading to higher rates of asthma, COPD, and even death. The devastation doesn’t stop there—it pumps dangerous greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and threatens ecosystems across the state. Enough is enough. If it weren’t for a community college sociology class, Clarkson senior associate Mark I. Richards may have never become a lawyer. As a first-gen college student, wasn’t quite sure what his path would be. But his first class at MiraCosta College ignited his passion for justice, and the community and resources he found there gave him the confidence to later transfer to University of California, Berkeley. Jackie Martin could barely walk and was only two weeks into his rehab care at a nursing home when a rep from UnitedHealth Group burst into his room at 2:30 a.m. to tell him his stay would be ending that week. Jackie and his family appealed UHG’s decision and won. The next week, he was hit with another denial. He won that appeal, too. But after receiving the third coverage denial, he decided to head home, exhausted. He died five days later. Last year, Jackie’s son Robby joined Clarkson Law Firm's class action suit against UHG, representing his father’s estate. Jackie’s story is a powerful and devastating example of how insurance companies are wrongfully denying care to patients with Medicare Advantage plans?– and Robby hopes this fight for justice will lead to change for others.
