  • In continuation of our series honoring African American pioneers in entomology, we're looking into the life and legacy of Dr. Margaret James Strickland Collins, known commonly as the "Termite Lady." A West Virginia native, Collins became the first female African American entomologist, graduating with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Throughout her career, Collins led several expeditions throughout North and South America, conducting fieldwork and having a particular interest in the behaviors and consequences of termites. She would eventually discover the species "Neotermes luykxi", a termite native to Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Hawaii. Collins is also noted for her brave efforts in participating in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.

  • As we continue to recognize African American trailblazers in entomology in honor of Black History Month, we're exploring Sophie Lutterlough's life and legacy. While racially-motivated barriers initially denied her of her dream job as a curator for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Lutterlough's momentum led her to further her education and eventually become a successful entomologist, co-identifying over 40 species of insects. Known as "the one-woman insect bureau" by her colleagues, Lutterlough worked tirelessly preparing, restoring, and classifying insects. Not only did these efforts eventually lead to her accepting her dream job with the SNMNH - Lutterlough's work was also recognized with the Exemplary Service Award, as well as the naming of a mite species in her honor: the Pygmephorus Lutterloughae.

  • Continuing our recognition of Black History Month and celebrating influential African American figures in entomology, we're highlighting Ernest James Harris. One of the first African Americans to serve in the US Marine Corps, Harris worked for the United States Forest Service, working towards a graduate degree in entomology. Harris would then go on to work for the USDA and began working toward a doctoral research program involving the study of Mediterranean Fruit Flies. Ernest James Harris would eventually posit the idea of introducing a parasitic species of wasp to help eradicate fruit fly eggs, a practice adopted by several countries to rid them of these once-common pests.

  • Known as the "silent destroyer," termites can establish entire colonies without making their presence known. If you see flying termites around your home or property, an infestation may be closer than you think. Their mission is to reproduce and establish new colonies, which can lead to a serious problem. • This Black History Month, we're turning the spotlight to African American scientists who were influential in the development of modern-day pest control. To kick things off, we're highlighting entomologist and educator, Dr. Charles Henry Turner, who published dozens of papers covering his research of insects and invertebrates, including ants, bees, and cockroaches.
