Under the direction of Vache King our Achievers are exposed to so many opportunities and informational sessions. One session is the "Community Service" project sponsored by the Winchester Mayor's office. Here Mayor Joellen Reed shares with our Achievers what to expect on this "Community Service" session.

The weather was perfect and so was this activity. Our Black and Hispanic Achievers took off on their customer service activity. Our first stop was the Winchester Police Department to understand the role and responsibility of the police. We discussed the importance of the community they serve, and how they can become involved in a program with the police department at the age of 14. Our Achievers also toured the 911 dispatch center to see the brains of the police department and lastly experienced a drunk driving simulation. This was so important for our achievers to understand the impact substances have on their agility and decision making. We then traveled to the Winchester Fire Department and what an adventure! We learned about the timing required to put on the necessary gear to go out on a call; witnessing our Fire Professionals complete this in under 1 minute WOW and WOW!! Our Achievers were able to climb up on the fire truck, learning every aspect of how the firemen utilize the equipment. We also learned about the Baby Box, which is designed to give families an alternative option to ensure newborns are getting the nurturing they need and deserve. Thank you again to Mayor Reed, Commissioner Strode, Winchester Police and Fire Departments! We salute YOU! +12

Kentucky State University is a public HBCU (Historically Black College & University) land-grant university (1890) in Frankfort, KY founded in 1886 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons. Our Achievers sailed out to set themselves up for their future! We learned so much about the founding of the college, the available programs, the wealth of scholarship opportunities offered, and the activities of college life!! The K-State presenters informed our achievers that it is never too early to think about college so when entering or while in high school to align their scheduling for success and college readiness. Thank you again to Kentucky State University and staff for welcoming our Achievers with such warmth and valuable information!

The Senior Interpreter Co-Op participants shadowed professional Medical Interpreters at UK Healthcare System today! "It really was a great day. I couldn't be more proud of the professionalism this group of students showed at the hospital and how well they represented themselves and Clark County Schools. The staff at UK devoted their entire day to the students and without our prompting highlighted the significance of the certification training and proficiency testing the students completed and will carry with them through their careers." - Kent Coogle, English Learners Program, Community Education Director CCPS Sarah Hesler, Language Services Director, UK Healthcare and Nancy Hernandez, Manager Language Services, UK Healthcare shared about the role of Medical Interpreter with the students. The students were able to individually shadow with a professional Medical Interpreter. Some students were in the Emergency Room, Kentucky Clinic, and other areas of UK Healthcare System. It was a great ending to the Fall Senior Interpreter Co-Op. It was an amazing day. Thank you to Greater Clark Foundation for sponsoring the first year of the Clark County Senior Interpreter Co-Op, and to everyone who supported this program as we assist in helping our students earn a meaningful diploma!
