Shutting down the US air quality monitoring program makes no economic sense - we found that the program reduced pollution around the world, saved lives, and quickly paid for itself thanks to reductions in hardship pay to US diplomats living in better conditions. In 2008, a small air quality monitor on the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing sparked a revolution.? The device began tweeting hourly updates about pollution levels, revealing that Beijing's air quality was worse than the Chinese government acknowledged. The backlash was fierce. The Chinese government called the data illegal and demanded the reports stop, but public pressure forced a shift. China responded by launching its own air monitoring system, increased pollution control funding, and even collaborated with the U.S. on environmental initiatives. By 2013, it had publicly released PM2.5 data, leading to stricter emissions standards and massive pollution reduction efforts. By 2015, this movement spread to dozens of U.S. embassies worldwide. A 2022 study confirmed —when air is monitored, governments act. Now, the U.S. has shut down air quality tracking at more than 60 embassies. While the program may return, the takeaway is clear—countries must take air monitoring seriously and apply the lessons from this initiative. Because without data, there’s no pressure. No urgency. No progress. What gets measured, gets fixed.

Almaty’s air quality in 2024: 5x worse than WHO standards, dirty winter days, but cleaner air for those who live in the right place. I’m excited to share Almaty Air Initiative’s publicly available air quality report, analyzing 2024 data from Clarity Movement Co. sensors and comparing it to 2023. Key Takeaways: 1. The annual average PM2.5 concentration in Almaty in 2024 exceeded World Health Organization standards by nearly 5(!) times. 2. When not to breathe?From November to February, air quality in Almaty remained harmful to health in both 2023 and 2024. In December 2024, pollution levels (50.6 μg/m3) were approximately 10% higher than in December 2023 (46.7 μg/m3). Top 3 most polluted days: February 6: PM2.5 reached 114 μg/m3 (7.6x WHO standards). December 25 & 26: Pollution peaked at 106 and 102 μg/m3, respectively. 3. 164 clean days in 2024?The number of days meeting WHO air quality standards (PM2.5 < 15 μg/m3) increased from 137 in 2023 to 164 in 2024. The main improvement occurred during summer (May–August), with 22 additional clean days recorded. Other seasons showed no significant changes. 4. Summer Air: 5 times cleaner than winter. Summer 2024 saw the cleanest air with PM2.5 levels at 11.5 μg/m3, while winter pollution spiked to 49.9 μg/m3—five times higher. 5. Who gets to breathe clean air in Almaty? Southern districts breathe cleaner air—twice as much as the north. - Most polluted: Zhetysu & Turksib (PM2.5 avg. 31.2 μg/m3) - Cleanest: Medeu & Bostandyk (PM2.5 avg. 16.1 μg/m3) Clean air starts with transparent data.
