Nitrogen oxides (NO?), primarily nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO?), are critical #airpollutants with far-reaching implications for both human health and the #environment. These gases are predominantly generated by human activities—especially fossil fuel combustion and vehicle emissions—and contribute to the formation of #smog, acid rain, and ground-level ozone. Exposure to NO? can trigger respiratory problems, with children being particularly vulnerable. NO? plays a role in #climatechange and even damages infrastructure. While regulatory frameworks like the EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards have helped drive a 70% reduction in U.S. NO? emissions from 2002 to 2022, the need for accurate and continuous monitoring remains essential. In 17 countries, this has been the only public and open source of government-sponsored reference-grade air quality data; and in every location the data has provided incredible value to U.S. citizens and local communities alike. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless, and highly dangerous gas that impacts both human health and the #environment. It is produced by the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels, making sources like car exhaust, wildfires, and industrial emissions major contributors to CO air pollution. While CO does not directly contribute to #globalwarming, it plays an indirect role by interfering with atmospheric processes that break down greenhouse gases like methane and ozone, prolonging their presence in the atmosphere. Exposure to carbon monoxide can be extremely harmful, as it reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Even low levels of exposure can cause dizziness, nausea, confusion, and long-term health complications, while high levels can be fatal. Although global ambient CO levels have declined in recent decades due to #cleanertechnologies and stricter regulations, continuous monitoring remains important, particularly during wildfires and in urban areas with high vehicle emissions. At Clarity Movement, we are committed to advancing #airquality measurement technology to help better understand and mitigate ambient CO air pollution.
