I am tremendously proud that The Student Life Newspaper featured the Tagalog language table! Part of the institutional change I intend to see and plant the seed here in Pomona is increasing support for Southeast Asian students. A huge one is language-learning. I enjoy being part of the Kasama E-board and the Southeast Asian Program (SEAP) at the Asian American Resource Center as it allows for me to put into practice what community work looks like in intersection with higher education. Thank you Kian de Torrontegui Bayno (PZ '27) and Rom Arca (PO '24) for co-leading the table with me! Also big thanks for Dr. Michael Manalo-Pedro for your continued guidance and support. The opportunity to join this incredible team and immerse myself in learning the intricacies of marketing and fundraising within campaign work aligns with my passion for political work. ??

Congratulations to Alvin Villarosa ’25, who has been awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, the highest governmental honor for undergraduate STEM researchers. Awarded to college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming the next generation of research leaders, the Goldwater Scholarship is among the oldest and most sought-after undergraduate scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics fields. Eleven Claremont McKenna students have been named Goldwater Scholars since Congress established the scholarship in 1986 to honor U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. Villarosa, a Science Management major with a Neuroscience concentration, was drawn to STEM research early on at CMC, specifically learning and applying various neural techniques and technology to learn more about the brain. For his research work, Villarosa has investigated seizures in mice; his ultimate goal is to attend medical school and pursue a PhD to research ways to alleviate epilepsy symptoms and disorders. Villarosa applied for the competitive Goldwater Scholarship with support from his advisor, CMC Professor Alison Harris, and CMC Professor Wei-Chin Hwang, both of whom he has collaborated with on graduate-level research projects. He also received support from CMC's fellowships advising department, which has helped nearly 100 students apply to over 25 fellowships opportunities this year. “As I worked with Alvin throughout the application, it was apparent that his interest in the future of research and medicine embodied the spirit of CMC: His dedication to science management and equity is a great example of the kind of student Goldwater is looking for,” said Yi Shun Lai ’96, CMC’s Assistant Director of Fellowships Advising.
