CO2 heat pump = smaller buffer size ?? Imagine you have a 150KW peak heat demand for 2 hours. And imagine you want to cover this with a buffer in order to only use your heat pump on cheap electricity. How big would the buffer have to be? ?? On a CO2 heat pump with a 75/35 system it would be a bit over 8 cubic meters ?? On an R290 heat pump with a 65/55 system it would be just over 26 cubic meters Of course there would be a bit extra for stratification and for defrost. But the difference is massive in terms of space and cost! Avoiding peak time tariffs or using power during low tariffs is set to become an important part of the government's flexibility strategy for clean power by 2030. There'll be big savings to be made on the cost of electricity. Having effective thermal storage will be really important to maximise the value to heat users. The learnings? ?? ?? Think you know about GWP? ?? Think again! ? As you probably already know, GWP is a measure of the relative global warming effects of different refrigerants. It assigns a value to the amount of heat trapped by a certain mass of a refrigerant, relative to the amount of heat trapped by the same mass of carbon dioxide over a specific period of time. BUT it isn't as clear cut as it seems. ?? GWP values vary by source (eg. R32 is often quoted as 677 but the UN uses 749). This is because of the details, methodology and data used by different sources to derive the GWP. ?? GWP values change as knowledge improves. In 1995, R22 had a GWP of 1500, but in 2016 it was 1810. ?? Some refrigerants are given low GWP values because they are a blend - but they still contain high GWP components. R454C (promoted as a low GWP refrigerant with a GWP of 162) contains R32 (with a GWP of ~700) and R1234yf (an HFO which breaks down into TFA, leading to ground water pollution). ? GWP is measured over time. The usual number for GWP is over 100 years, but 20-year values are available too. When considering climate change, a 20-year horizon feels more appropriate. With all this in mind, the important 20-year climate impact of refrigerants is much higher than you might think. On the other hand, by using natural refrigerants such as R290 (propane) and R744 (carbon dioxide) there is no uncertainty or risk. ?? The GWP of CO2 is 1 and always will be. ?? The GWP of propane is 3 over 100 years or less than 1 over 20 years. Not only that, but natural refrigerants are cheaper than chemicals, have a more secure supply chain, and generally perform better in heat pumps. Universities are key to getting the UK to net zero ?? So, we were really excited to be involved in a recent project with the Uni of York, which was supported by PSDS funding from Salix. The university received a grant of ￡854,805 - which they used to decarbonise 2 accommodation blocks and an office building with Clade?appliances, design and installation. It's been estimated that the project should directly save a whopping 140 tonnes of carbon per year ?? The uni is planning to be a net zero campus by 2030 ??
