On October 23, the USFWS released final tools and guidance documents for northern long-eared bat (NLEB) and tricolored bat. These include a new, combined Determination Key (Dkey) that addresses both species, and a guidance document for voluntary environmental review of projects.?While the tricolored bat is not yet listed and remains proposed as endangered, should the species be listed under the Endangered Species Act, these tools can be implemented immediately upon the effective date of the rule, streamlining what can sometimes be a rocky transition from proposed species to listed. Dkeys and the associated guidance documents are used by federal and non-federal project proponents to analyze proposed project activities to determine if a project will have impacts on federally listed species and streamlines any necessary consultation with the USFWS.?Besides the addition of the tricolored bat, there are two other notable changes from the former NLEB Dkey: 1) the minimum tree cutting acreage criteria for triggering USFWS coordination has been reduced and 2) forest density has been added as a criterion to consider when tree clearing occurs.???Merjent biologists keep close tabs on all things bats (among other things), so as always, don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! www.merjent.com

As growing season for wetland delineations nears its end - one question we get asked a lot is can wetland delineations be completed any time of the year? Yes, but the delineator may not be able to accurately describe and document information on all three wetland parameters to justify wetland boundaries. It depends on the characteristics of the wetland and conditions at the time of the delineation. For example, wetland delineations in agricultural cropland can often be assessed using remote imagery with very little or no onsite observations. Delineations of wetlands with subtle wetland-upland transitions conducted during a period of frozen soils and snow cover will likely prohibit adequate observations of the three wetland parameters. The more subtle the wetland-upland transition is and the harsher the climatic conditions at the time (deep snow, frozen ground, senesced vegetation, etc.), the more likely that a wetland delineation will need to be conducted within or close to the growing season. Generally growing season dates go from Mid-April to Mid-October across northern Minnesota. Give us a call to get your project scheduled: (218) 290-8618, before winter arrives! www.CKWetlands.com #ckwetlands #wetlanddelineations

With summer winding down it's been a busy field season season across Minnesota. Make sure to get your wetland delineations completed before the growing season ends as winter approaches. #wetlanddelineation #ckwetlands #wetland

Great weekend to see some flooded timber Type 7 Hardwood Swamp wetlands across our region. Black Ash are one of our most common wetland species across northern Minnesota. #ckwetlands ##wetlanddelineation
