The New York Times released a report this weekend that showed the rate at which people have spent more time at home has increased drastically in recent years. But believe it or not, this is a #trend that has long been observed and anticipated. Here’s why I think this matters. ?? Back in his 2000 book, “Bowling Alone,” Robert D. Putnam, a professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School, wrote that Americans had traded their social institutions (eg; churches, social clubs, even bowling leagues) for social isolation, which has led to negative repercussions for local communities and American society as a whole. This trend has been exacerbated in recent years with the advent of “social” media. The report from NYT shows that those aged 15 to 34 have seen their time at home increase the most drastically. People in this age range now spend roughly TWO HOURS more at home each day than this demographic did in 2003. Those who understood this trend of Americans spending more time at home could have been early investors in companies that profit off of this like Netflix or DoorDash. ?? This raises the question: What other businesses or industries will benefit from this movement, or alternatively, be forced to extinction? What are some early trends we are seeing now that could lead to massive changes in our daily lives decades in the future? ?? ????
