Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions of others who suffered under Nazi persecution. We also pay tribute to the strength and resilience of Holocaust survivors, whose courage and stories ensure the world never forgets. Their voices are a powerful reminder of the importance of standing against hatred and building a more compassionate future. The World Jewish Congress is hosting their annual #WeRemember social campaign to ensure that the horrors of the past will never be repeated or forgotten. Chicago Alderman Silverstein's resolution commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day was signed by Mayor Brandon Johnson at the City Council last week. Maya Gumirov, Survivor Services Director, Holocaust Community Services CJE SeniorLife was among other guests of honor. The resolution stated that tens of thousands of Jewish households call the greater Chicago area and specifically 50th Ward “home,” and their heritage is part of Chicago history. The Jewish American experience has been affected dramatically by the Holocaust with many Chicago Jewish residents being descendants of Holocaust victims and survivors. January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day and serves as a time for people across the world to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. This year also marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest Nazi killing center and concentration camp, where approximately one million Jews perished along with 70 thousand Poles, 21 thousand Roma and Sinti, 15 thousand Soviet POWs, and 12 thousand prisoners of other ethnic backgrounds. On this day, the entire world honors the legacy of Holocaust victims and survivors through their remarkable stories and history, and we increase efforts to counter Holocaust denial, distortion, and revisionism. Holocaust denial is an expression of antisemitism and requires local and international response aimed at combating racism, hate, and the dramatic increase in hate crimes and violence against Jewish people across the United States and here in Chicago. #internationalholocaustremembranceday
