She relishes opportunities to speak with middle school students about her experiences and interests in science to inspire them to pursue a career in science. She approaches her talks with rawness and honesty. “I talk about my failures that led me to where I am now and how important it is to use the steps backwards as opportunities to grow and learn. Not only do I get great feedback and questions from the students, but it’s been healing to me as it’s helped me come to terms with some of my past failures.”

As we continue embracing lean manufacturing principles, we realized a gap in easily accessible data to back up our decisions. We turned to Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) at Georgia Tech to help us identify, evaluate and implement data historian software. As a result, we’ve seen increased throughput throughout our facilities, with production capacity increasing by 20 percent. It’s helped our managers understand what’s happening across all shifts, even when they’re not onsite, so they can identify and celebrate efficiencies, while also troubleshooting and correcting issues. We look forward to presenting our poster, “Rapid Field-Deployable PFAS Sensor: A Novel Polymer-based Technology,” next month at the Department of Defense's (DoD) Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium. Our technology addresses the pressing demand for rapid, onsite PFAS detection in response to the latest Primary Drinking Water Regulations released last spring by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It set enforceable maximum allowable levels for six key PFAS compounds: PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (commonly known as GenX), PFHxS, and PFBS. We will share how our Salvus Detection Platform fulfills the need for rapid, onsite PFAS detection. Utilizing interferometric detection technology licensed from Georgia Tech Research Institute, we’ve developed a polymer-based sensor that is incorporated into a handheld device. The portability enables users to generate real-time data in the field so they can efficiently map contamination zones, make more timely decisions, and rapidly deploy a remediation plan.
