Check out this article in the American Journal of Public Health, written by Civity's own co-founders, Malka & Palma -- A “Civity” Approach Helps Build the Civic Muscle That Underlies Healthy Communities FROM THE ARTICLE: Relationships—especially those connecting members of disparate social groups—are the essential basis for productive collaborations. Without such relationships, discussions break down, communities get stuck, and people get left out. Our key strategies are to (1) make the “other” visible, particularly to people with more privilege, and (2) strengthen relationships across difference, which together (3) support and increase the effectiveness of existing community-based work, which advances public health. Civity designed an experiential workshop centering structured one-on-one conversations in which participants exchange personal stories, which effectively bring them into authentic relationship in a surprisingly short time (10 minutes). Sharing personal stories creates human-to-human connections that provide an entry point for engagement and erode stereotypes and other power-based “us versus them” mindsets.
