An inspiring meeting with Mr. Nadir Gul Barech, CEO, Mr. Arshad Rashid, Chief Programmes, and staff from Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund in Islamabad. Promoting democracy through education in the U.S. and abroad.
关于我们
Since 2003, the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute’s Civic Initiative is dedicated to promoting democracy through education in both the U.S. and abroad. Each year, we bring a select group of students, scholars and professionals from around the world to the UMass Amherst campus for courses that examine modern politics and public policy. Programs are designed for attendees to improve their leadership skills, increase their subject knowledge and learn about U.S. culture. Our courses are based on engaging students through active learning, integrating classroom readings, lectures and discussions with community-based, collaborative projects that offer practical, real-life experience.

The final day of our SUSI Pakistan Public Policymaking reunion conference in Islamabad, Pakistan included a moderated panel of development professionals, including Aasim Reza (Institute of Rural Management), SUSI alumnus Abdur Rehman (Oxford Policy Management), SUSI alumnus Ahmad Qazi (European Union in Pakistan) and SUSI alumnus Muzamil N. Panezai (UNICEF Pakistan). Thanks to UMass Donahue Institute's Ken LeBlond for moderating. The last session was a "reciprocity ring" exercise. Each person at a table stated their professional "ask" for something with which they could use help. Other people then offered their help as they were able. It was a great networking exercise across four cohorts. U.S. Department of State Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network

Our next day in #Islamabad was all about being with our SUSI Comparative Public Policymaking alumni from 2020-2024. Our #embassy colleagues Kelly and Shahid started off the day talking about PUAN small grants and the benefits of the US/Pakistan alumni network. Our staff then led sessions on community storytelling, storytelling for marginalized communities and developing social initiatives. We ended with a special panel of women alumni who talked about their post-SUSI experiences. The large group then went out to #LokVersa for cultural exhibits from each province and lots of music!

We started the Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) alumni reunion on Day 2 in Pakistan. Besides catching up with our 2020-2024 cohorts, we held one session. Ken LeBlond from the UMass Donahue Institute talked about creating a personal professional brand and applying it to make LinkedIn the best representation of themselves.

Our first full day in #Islamabad #Pakistan was mostly business! After a morning meeting with U.S. Embassy staff, we reunited with our old partners at the Institute of Rural Management at their HQ. We ended the day at dinner with local friends and great food! U.S. Department of State

We often get DMs and emails about how to apply for our programs and what are the qualifications to become a candidate. THE TRUTH: we don't process applications. Those are handled by the U.S. Department of State, whether here in the U.S. or via a U.S. embassy in your country. To find out about ANY exchange program (whether hosted by us or any other entity in the U.S.) go here: https://lnkd.in/gSNbb9Za. You can browse programs based on your home country. Regarding announcements for application windows: Those are also announced by foreign embassies. Follow your local U.S. embassy on social media and check their website to get the information. Thank you and good luck!

Fatima, a 2024 SUSI Pakistan participant, penned an article about her expectations and realities of being the U.S. and how her American stereotypes were affected. Please read the article and "upvote" it at the bottom so it gets more exposure on the DPT site. https://lnkd.in/ejKHggkr
