City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members serve in schools to prepare students with skills to succeed in school and in life.

关于我们

At City Year, we believe that all students can succeed and that developing the skills and mindsets of children and young adults contributes to strong, vibrant communities—outcomes that benefit all of us. Many students lack access to learning environments and resources they need to thrive in school and in life, due to systemic inequities that disproportionately affect students of color and students growing up in low-income households. City Year AmeriCorps members serve in schools all day, every day, preparing students with the social, emotional, and academic skills and mindsets to succeed in school and in life. City Year AmeriCorps members not only make a difference in the lives of students they serve, but also acquire valuable skills that help them and prepare them to be leaders in their communities and their careers.

Did you know? Michigan's governor has officially declared March 9 – 15, 2025, as AmeriCorps Week in Michigan. "AmeriCorps Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and commitment of the more than 1.2 million Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and millions more who have served in AmeriCorps Seniors and their community partners, and to encourage more Americans to follow their footsteps in service," Gov. Whitmer says. To our City Year Detroit AmeriCorps members, we APPRECIATE you. Click the video player below for a message from one of our impact managers.

  • ?? It’s AmeriCorps Appreciation Week, one week to celebrate the millions who have raised their hands to serve. ???? AmeriCorps is a nationwide force for positive change. We see it firsthand right here at City Year Detroit, where our AmeriCorps members proudly serve student in schools across Detroit every day. This is our chance to say WE APPRECIATE YOU. Here’s a word from our Chief of Staff Andre Ebron. ??

  • 18 minute networking at our City Year headquarters in Detroit was a great success today. This national event, sponsored by Deloitte, helps to build career and talent pathways for our City Year AmeriCorps members. More than 50 business leaders from various industries volunteered their time to share their professional journeys and experiences with the goal of helping our AmeriCorps members to maximize their potential. There were also professional headshots. "Mentorship is the shortcut to success," said Andre Ebron, "Whenever we can share the wisdom we have gained along our pathway it empowers the next generation." Thank you to all who took part and made this day possible.

  • At City Year Detroit, we’re committed to making learning exciting and memorable. This National #Reading Month, we went beyond the pages of Dr. Seuss books — students at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary explored storytelling through creative dioramas and even wrote their own alternative endings to classic tales. "City Year tries to make a lasting impression of encouragement in education, and this year we’re taking it a step further," said Jonaz Bryd, Impact Director at City Year Detroit. Thanks to the Detroit Lions and Dr. Seuss Foundation for helping us bring the joy of reading to life.

March is National #Reading Month, and City Year Detroit, in partnership with the Detroit Lions and the Dr. Seuss Foundation, brought the magic of reading to Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary today. Students lit up with excitement as The Cat in the Hat made a special appearance — alongside Lions Legend Eric Hipple, linebacker DeRon Gilbert, cheerleaders, and Roary the Lions' mascot. With interactive reading stations, face painting, and a chance to write letters to Lions players, the event was all about making literacy fun and engaging.? At City Year, our AmeriCorps members focus on building student confidence and literacy skills through small group work. Our student success coaches are trained to follow the guidance set by the schools they serve in, suggestions from their partner teachers, and the needs of their students.
