Sharing our work in urban greening ?? ? As part of the Perth Inner City Group, we took part in the WA Local Government Association (WALGA)’s Urban Forest Conference this month. During the conference, Vincent hosted a site visit to Hyde Park. The tour outlined: ? The impact of the polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) at Hyde Park, our collaboration with DPIRD on tree management and our approach to research and restoration. ? Collaboration and stakeholder engagement with DPIRD, ArbWest, WALGA, and other local governments. ? Hyde Park Reference Group’s contribution to restoration works. ? Next steps for treatment works and research trials. Our Mayor Alison Xamon also joined a panel of experts and spoke about the challenges for local governments to respond to the PSHB infestation at WALGA’s conference. Our Australia-first GreenTrack priority assessment service has been expanded to include a new incentive designed to increase tree retention?? The service provides faster approvals and incentives for sustainable home builds and renovations. We have expanded the eligibility of the $200 rebate, so that applicants who retain significant trees can now claim the discount. This is part of our bid to protect urban canopy across Vincent. We are using new technology funded by the Road Safety Commission WA to monitor traffic movements and near misses at the Fitzgerald and Angove Street intersection in North Perth. The City of Vincent is the first local government in the metro area to trial the technology. The camera uses AI software to analyse what it captures in real time, identifying risk levels and near-miss incidents. This de-identified data will be used to help us plan safer roads. A newly created public open space facing the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) at East Perth Power Station is ready for Perth Festival. The goal was to transform the sandy, underutilised space into a public park that can be used for community events, picnics, outdoor cinemas and concerts. As part of the Perth Festival which starts tonight, Friday 7 February, the forecourt area will be home to Casa Musica – a southern-Europe inspired live music venue with food trucks. There will also be visual art projections screened onto the walls of the building of the power station in an art commission called Boorloo Contemporary. These two family-friendly activations are proudly supported by the City of Vincent and will be running until Sunday 2 March.
