Kudos to our Planning Division team for receiving the 2024 Planning Excellence Award from the Arizona Chapter of the American Planning Association. The award was presented for their 2050 General Plan Youth Immersive eXperience. Mesa was the first city in the country to use immersive technology to engage our youth. Our Planning team collaborated with approximately 400 students from 10 high schools and provided them the experience to explore realistic, immersive urban environments and provide feedback on the future of Mesa. By embracing this cutting-edge technology, they set a new standard in public engagement and planning for future generations. #TheMesaWay

Congratulations to our Innovation & Technology team for winning not one but two awards at the Municipal Information Systems of California (MISAC) annual conference! Mesa is the only city out of state to ever win either award and the only city to win two awards at this year's conference. The first award they received was the MISAC Visual Information Award for their work with our real-time crime center. In addition, they also received the MISAC Technical Excellence Award which is given to cities that demonstrate best practices in twelve different categories. Job well done! Can personal hobbies help you in other areas of your life, like work? For our Water Resources Director, Chris Hassert, his lifelong love of painting has taught him valuable skills that he applies to his work here at the City. Some of his takeaways include making sure to choose projects that inspire you — if you’re not inspired, others won’t be either — and developing a process that you can stick to. “Trust your process but be willing to try new approaches. In our water quality lab, we can’t wing it, we’ve got to stick to the process,” he said. He also has learned the importance of occasionally stepping back to observe your progress, as he did with his painting of the Grand Canyon. “At work, if we have a complicated program, you have to have to step back,” he said. “You can realize we’re kind of veering off course, we need to course correct.” Chris has learned that, both with painting and his professional work, you’re never done learning. With every new painting he’ll make in the future, “I can guarantee I’ll learn and grow,” he said. Check out his paintings, including “Water Dogs,” which features City of Mesa Water Resources employees. Do you have a personal passion that you’ve learned life lessons from? Share some of your takeaways! #TheMesaWay #ThankAWaterHeroDay

Women going through menopause are the fastest growing demographic in the workforce currently, but why is it a topic that is often avoided? The City of Mesa is proud to open the conversation about menopause through virtual and in-person education and awareness for our employees. We know that supporting women through this change in their lives benefits EVERYONE in the workplace because we all most likely know someone in our lives experiencing this. While leading the way in women's health, our wellness program also supports our male employees with regular classes, webinars and screenings focused on men's health.
