A new unit will soon be joining the Canton Police Department following a final approval last week by the City Council. Canton Ambassadors for Public Safety (CAPS) will start in early summer as a new initiative for community support. “Through this program, civilians will be hired and trained to help provide needed services including taking reports for non-violent and non-emergency type calls," said Chief Marty Ferrell Charged with patrolling parks and trails, assisting with non-violent reports, helping direct traffic, participating in special event operations, and working private property claims, the CAPS unit will be a force multiplier for the sworn officers at Canton PD. “These positions will allow individuals interested in the area of law enforcement that might not yet meet the age for the academy to get involved in meaningful work," added City Manager Billy Peppers. "Having additional staff patrolling parks and other community gathering spaces will improve safety." The positions will begin being advertised this month, and new employees will see an 8-week training period. If interested, visit?www.cantonga.gov/careers for more information.

It highlights their commitment to environmental stewardship and their leadership in sustainability practices. The City of Canton, Georgia is home to Hickory Log Creek Reservoir at Lake Canton, featuring a 180-foot tall roller compacted concrete dam (the tallest in Georgia not constructed by the US Army Corps or Georgia Power). The reservoir is a raw water storage facility holding nearly 6 billion gallons of water at the ready to help supply the needs of Canton and co-owner Cobb-Marietta Water Authority. Covering 411 acres with 15 miles of shoreline, Lake Canton is a premier recreational and natural jewel in North Georgia. A recent study by HGOR noted that of the total shoreline and within the 150-foot protective buffer not a single invasive plant species existed. Routinely, representatives for CCMWA and the City of Canton gather with others to review the Emergency Action Plan and conduct tabletop exercises to review situations involving the dam. These exercises include colleagues from Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services, Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, US Army Corps of Engineers, Safe Dams at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, US National Weather Service in Atlanta, Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Schnabel Engineering, and a variety of City of Canton Departments. Preparation takes time. Building action plans take time. Partnerships take time. Time is the most valuable asset in an emergency. #cantonga #explorecantonga #icma #gacities #dams
