Roughly 34 million adults in the U.S. are current smokers, and more than 16 million Americans live with smoking-related diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions. One major factor contributing to this public health crisis is the availability of flavored tobacco products, often marketed to youth and vulnerable communities. During Black History Month, we at CityHealth reaffirm our unwavering commitment to health equity. We believe that your identity or where you live should never determine your access to a safe place to live, a healthy body and mind, or a thriving environment. Achieving health equity means dismantling the social, economic, contextual, and systemic barriers that hinder health, with a continued and explicit commitment to uplift those most impacted by historical disadvantages. This month, CityHealth honors the legacy of Black city leaders and public health leaders and remains steadfast in our work to break down systemic barriers to health for everyone.
