Lovey, an 8-year-old Labrador, presented with lethargy and increased thirst. After initial treatment, she returned with similar symptoms, and diagnostics revealed a splenic mass. Concerned about cancer, her owners chose supportive care and a non-invasive test, which was negative. Lovey had a splenectomy, revealing a benign hematoma, and recovered well. Having been with CityVet for 21 of the past 25 years, Dr. Leigh Johnston, Partner at CityVet | Frisco Lexington, has one of the more interesting paths to clinic ownership! Her journey with CityVet began in 2003. Not as a veterinarian but as a client at the CityVet Oak Lawn clinic. She was working as a business analyst, but felt a need to provide a greater service to the people in her life and veterinary medicine was the direction she decided to take. Hands-on experience was required before applying to vet school, so she interviewed with CityVet founder and accomplished veterinarian, Dr. Cannon who then later allowed her to shadow a surgery, further solidifying her passion for veterinary medicine. During and after veterinary school, she worked in multiple CityVet locations (CityVet | Uptown, CityVet | Flower Mound, CityVet | Preston Forest + Urgent Care, and finally, CityVet | Addison) for many years, gaining different perspectives and building connections within the amazing network. In 2014 Dr. Johnston had her first set of twins and had to rethink how to balance her career with raising them. Then, in 2016 she had another set of twins, making a work-life balance even more important, prompting the decision to transition into relief work, allowing for more flexibility in her schedule. Through all of these transitions, CityVet remained home for Dr. Johnston so when the time finally came to own her own clinic, there was no doubt in her mind that it was something she wanted to accomplish with CityVet. As of November 2024, she is the proud Lead Veterinarian and Owner of CityVet | Frisco Lexington! At CityVet, we believe in nurturing growth at every stage of a veterinary professional’s career and Dr. Johnston’s own journey is proof that a veterinarian-led model empowers professionals to thrive while maintaining strong relationships with their clients and patients.
