CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF WACO — As part of the year-long series celebrating Waco's 175th Anniversary, let's look at our infamous Suspension Bridge! For over 150 years, the Suspension Bridge has been one of Waco’s most recognizable and well-known landmarks. Originally constructed in 1870, it has served as a thoroughfare for horses, cows, wagons, and automobiles. Today, the bridge continues to connect our community across the Brazos River as a pedestrian bridge. It serves as a popular destination for residents and tourists alike in the heart of Waco! Our Parks & Recreation Department was honored with several "Best in Texas" awards at the Texas Festivals & Events Association's Marketing Awards Competition. GRAND OPENING (Cameron Park Zoo) — The City of Waco celebrated the grand opening of the Corwin, Estes, and Jaynes Education Center and the Carol Schmidhauser Veterinary Hospital at Cameron Park Zoo! The Corwin, Estes, and Jaynes Education Center The 11,600-square-foot center is dedicated to teaching more about animal conservation. It will house 'animal ambassadors,' including snakes and small reptiles, dedicated to hands-on learning. It features multiple classrooms, offices, event rental spaces, and technology that will enable worldwide remote learning experiences! The Carol Schmidhauser Veterinary Hospital The 8,900-square-foot hospital is dedicated to the health and wellness of all zoo animals in our care. It offers space to quarantine new animals when they arrive at the zoo, evaluation areas, treatment rooms, and state-of-the-art surgery suites. It also has spaces tailored for various types of animals requiring controlled environments for treatment.
