November is National Adoption Month, an opportunity to celebrate the work of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services Adoption Unit, part of the Child Welfare team in the Social Services division. Together they help children in need grow up in stable homes. To date in 2024, the team finalized adoptions for 25 children, including those over the age of 10, children with special needs, and four siblings who were adopted together. The City of Virginia Beach participates in SkillBridge, an internship program created by the Department of Defense that allows eligible service members to get work experience outside the military. Preparing to retire after 22 years of Navy service, Donta Allen was offered a SkillBridge internship in Occupational Safety in the City’s Human Resources Department. After his internship, Allen took a new role with the City as a Safety Programs Specialist, where he leads safety trainings, handles injury reporting, and does workplace assessments throughout the city.
