Our 5-Year Consolidated Plan outlines how we will address key priorities identified by #Toledo residents, including housing, homelessness services, economic development, public infrastructure, and community programs. Each year, we receive funding through the Community Development Block Grant, Emergency Solutions Grant, and HOME Investment Partnerships Program to support housing preservation, homelessness prevention, and community development. Before we finalize the plan, we need your input. Attend a public hearing to review the draft and share your feedback before it’s submitted! Meeting details here. https://ow.ly/fTPf50VkLtg

Inclusion is important in business as it creates a sense of community for customers. When everyone feels welcome, it strengthens our connections. Toledo is supporting this through our closed captioning ordinance. Closed captioning, which displays text reflecting an audio track at the bottom of a TV screen, is required in all public businesses in Toledo. This includes bars, restaurants, hospitals, doctor’s offices, entertainment venues, and other public spaces. By turning on closed captions, businesses make their services accessible to everyone, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is important for businesses to comply with this ordinance to ensure all customers have equal access to information and entertainment. This small change helps build a welcoming community for all. Last fall, Brandon Sehlhorst was named the 2024 Economic Developer of the Year by the Ohio Economic Development Association—an achievement that reflects the ongoing progress in Toledo’s economic growth. Under Brandon’s leadership, the City has worked to support businesses and the people they employ by securing major federal funding, including a $20 million USDOT RAISE Grant to improve walkability and neighborhood connectivity from Dorr St. and Adams St. and an additional $28 million grant for the RIVER East Toledo project to revitalize the waterfront. These investments help create better infrastructure, stronger neighborhoods, and more opportunities for businesses to thrive. Economic development isn’t just about projects—it’s about investing in neighborhoods, strengthening local businesses, and improving quality of life. From redeveloping long-vacant properties like Northtowne Square Mall, Southwyck Mall, and the Jefferson Center to securing funding for transformational improvements, these efforts are shaping a stronger future for Toledo.

Do you ever drive around Toledo and say, “Remember when that used to be (insert old business here)?” While our city has changed over the years, we’ve also seen new opportunities emerge. In 2023 alone, our Economic Development team helped create 322 new jobs, retain 230 jobs, and secured major redevelopment projects for underutilized spaces—like the former North Towne Square and Southwyck Malls. These efforts are bringing new life to spaces that once held so many memories. And our momentum didn’t stop there! In 2024, one of our very own Economic Development team members received a special award for their outstanding work. Stay tuned—we’ll be revealing who later today! ?? At the beginning of the year, we asked #Toledo residents to help us shape our priorities and goals for the next five years as we drafted our 5-Year Consolidated Plan for Housing and Community Development . Residents identified key areas—housing, homelessness services, economic development, public infrastructure, and community programs—that would best serve our community. Since then, we’ve taken your feedback, compiled recommendations, and built a strategic plan to guide our efforts from 2025 to 2029. Now, we’re ready to share our Five-Year Consolidated Plan! Join us at one of our public hearings this April to learn about the plan and provide your input before we submit it. ?? Public hearing details: https://ow.ly/G7Tu50VkfFm #ToledoHousing #CDBGInToledo

For nearly 100 years, Stanley’s Market has been a staple in Toledo’s North End—and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. As the next generation steps up to carry on the tradition, it’s a powerful reminder that family-owned businesses aren’t just about products—they’re about people, relationships, and legacies. Customers become friends, and families grow up not just running businesses, but building a community. What small business traditions have meant the most to you? Share your favorites as we celebrate the businesses that make Toledo feel like home! #ToledoSmallBusiness #ToledoProud (?? Pictured: Simon Zychowicz, 3rd Generation Grocer)

The North Towne Square Mall, once a bustling shopping destination in Toledo, opened its doors in 1981, featuring anchors like Lasalle's, The Lion Store, and Montgomery Ward. Over time, as shopping trends evolved, the mall faced challenges, leading to its closure in 2005 and eventual demolition in 2013. Recognizing the potential of this space, the City of Toledo remained committed to revitalizing it to meet our city's current needs—economic expansion and job creation. In July 2022, we took a major step by selling the site to NorthPoint Development, paving the way for new investment and opportunities. Now, this once-empty land is set to become a hub for new jobs, innovation, and long-term economic growth. The redevelopment of North Towne not only strengthens our local workforce but also reinforces Toledo’s reputation as a prime destination for businesses looking to grow. ??
