*DIWALI CELEBRATION* On Friday, November 8, city staff and elected officials had the opportunity to celebrate Diwali with members of Sun Prairie's Indian community! The evening was filled with a candle lighting ceremony, student presentations, dance performances, and a shared meal. - - -WHAT IS DIWALI?- - - Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by millions of people around the world. The word "Diwali" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Deepavali," which means "rows of lighted lamps." The festival usually lasts for five days, with the main celebration occurring on the third day. The festival holds great cultural and religious significance in Hinduism, but it is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. - - -WHERE DOES IT GET ITS NAME?- - - The name comes from the tradition of lighting clay lamps (deepa) outside homes, symbolizing inner light warding off spiritual darkness. Avali = row, hence Diwali. - - -THANK YOU- - - We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our Indian community for the invitation and willingness to celebrate together!
