  • The National Park Service (NPS) has named the City of Sumter, South Carolina and Sumter County “American World War II Heritage City.” ?? The American World War II Heritage City Program (AWWIIHC) honors the contributions of communities and commemorates the stories of the men, women, and children whose bravery and sacrifices shaped the U.S. home front during World War II and still impact our country today. ?Only one American World War II Heritage City can be designated in each state or territory, according to the NPS. “This is a great honor for our community and a testament to our community motto, ‘Uncommon Patriotism,’ as well as the enduring legacy of our military and veterans,” stated David Merchant, City of Sumter Mayor. “This designation will enhance our community efforts to preserve and promote our historical sites, attract visitors and historians, and foster a greater appreciation of our heritage. The 8 newly designated communities are: ?City of Sumter & Sumter County, South Carolina ?Calhoun and Ouachita Counties, Arkansas ?Plymouth Township, Michigan ?Municipality of Tinian & Auguiguan, Northern Mariana Islands ?Valley City, North Dakota ?North Kingstown, Rhode Island ?Ponca City and Kay County, Oklahoma, and ?Ogden, Utah “Sumter appreciates the National Park Service for recognizing and honoring the critical role our community played in American history,” stated Jim McCain, Sumter County Council Chairman. “This designation serves as a reminder for future South Carolinians of the important impact Sumter made and continues to make on our national security.” The World War II Heritage Cities program was established by the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019 to recognize the historical importance of the United States’ domestic involvement in World War II and ensure the continued preservation of a defining period in American history. • Out of an abundance of caution with the impending weather, offices of the City of Sumter will be closed on Thursday, August 8th, 2024. City of Sumter sanitation services will run on a delayed schedule on Thursday, August 8th. Continue to place your trash cans on the curb during the usual timeframe of 7 AM – 7 PM. Heavy rainfall in the amount of six-eight inches is expected Wednesday evening into Thursday afternoon in addition to sustained winds of 16-20 miles per hour and tropical wind gusts of 39-57 miles per hour. With hazardous driving conditions created by wind gusts and flooding, our top priority is ensuring the safety of our employees and citizens. As we continue to monitor conditions, please follow the City's social media accounts as well as www.sumtersc.gov for the latest updates.

  • Pardon our mess while we renovate. Starting July 22, the City is starting the redevelopment of the new Shot Pouch Greenway trailhead at Swan Lake Iris Gardens, and the North side (Bland Gardens) entrance will be closed until further notice. This expansion will provide a new parking lot off Bland Avenue with 54 paved parking spots, updated landscaping, and a new green space. Thank you for being so patient. We look forward to celebrating the improved entrance and amenities with you soon. #lovesumter #sumtersc #shotpouchgreenway #swanlakeirisgardens

  • The City of Sumter recently broke ground on a new water tank off of Cockerill Road, located in the Live Oak Industrial Park. This new elevated water tank will have the capacity for 1 million gallons, making it the largest water storage tank in the City. This will allow the City to increase their water storage capacity and help better serve the surrounding industries, commercial businesses, and residential areas. At double the size of the existing tank in the Live Oak Industrial Park, Sumter will have the capacity to continue the recruitment of major industrial businesses. This project is being funded through the Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program (SCIIP). Special thank you to Speaker of the House Murrell Smith for securing this funding and for his continued support for the growth of our City. Construction began in May 2024 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025. We look forward to sharing more updates as this project continues. #TeamSumter #SumterSC #LoveSumter
