The holiday season represents community, thankfulness, and giving back. The city of Sugar Land is thankful for staff that not only go out of their way to make our residents lives better than we ever imagined, but they also use their talents and expertise to support other agencies and communities to get through difficult times. Paige Levanti, Sugar Land’s Training Center Manager in Emergency Management deployed as part of the Texas A&M All-Hazards Incident Management Team (AHIMT) to perform emergency response operations following Hurricane Milton. The 10-person team deployed through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) to Florida to support the City of Holmes Beach with recovery, including debris, public safety, and public works operations. Paige served as the team’s Liaison Officer. Levanti recalls, “We went out on October 8th. This city also experienced Hurricane Helene just two weeks prior, so the staff and community were already hurting. It’ll be a long road to recovery for those areas and our team was happy to have assisted in the ways we could.” On October 12th, SLFD deployed Engineer Operator/Paramedic Adam Lopez and Firefighter/Paramedic Maurice Williams to support the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force to serve as Wildland Paramedic Unit, providing Advanced Life Support care near the fire-lines. Adam Lopez recalls "Maurice Williams and myself were requested to assist in wildfire standby in East Texas as a Wildland Paramedic Unit. During the deployment we responded to 4 wildfires in our response area. Our job was to provide advance life support to firefighters working on the fire line." and "When not on an active scene we had the privilege to work alongside the Texas forest service and participate in community outreach activities and training." Lopez said "I am very appreciative of the City of Sugar Land and Sugar Land Fire Department for allowing us the opportunity to help other communities across the great state of Texas in their time of need." Sugar Land could not be the bold, innovative, and trailblazing city it is today without our staff. To our employees, thank you for everything that you do.

Sugar Land is overjoyed and thankful that our employees go above and beyond for our residents! Chief Building Official for the City of Sugar Land, Joshua Doyle, CBO, MCP was recently awarded the Master Code Professional certification. Doyle is one of 1,000 people in the world to achieve this esteemed certification! The Master Code Professional certification is the highest level of designation the International Code Council offers. Less than 1% of industry professionals have obtained this certification. This certification has a rigorous track that requires an individual passing numerous International Code Council exams, accumulating a total of 30 credits, maintaining an active status by completing 60 hours of Continuing Education Units, and more! Doyle said "I started going after this certification two years ago, I was very excited, but it was a long road. At some points, I didn't think I would achieve it because the finish line was so far away." "The biggest push for me to go after the MCP was to receive higher scores on our BCEGS (Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule). The scores we get on our BCEGS directly determine premium insurance rates. As a result of this certification, it will help to lower insurance premiums for Sugar Land property owners." said Doyle. Doyle is one of the many trailblazing employees that Sugar Land is honored to have on our team. With this certification, Doyle proves that he is dedicated to creating a life better than imagined for Sugar Land and our residents.

Grant funding of up to $75,000 is available for your neighborhood's new capital projects. Applications close SOON on November 30, 2024, so make sure you apply before it ends! Formally known as the SL4B JCIP Program, the FUN Grant Program exists to empower community groups, such as homeowners associations (HOAs), property owners associations (POAs), and neighborhood community groups (RCGs), to revitalize and enhance the distinct character of each neighborhood or area of commerce. This partnership will promote economic development and workforce retention & attraction through the transformative power of placemaking, mobility, and community. Qualifying capital projects* must demonstrate a public benefit and be publicly accessible/enjoyable. Eligible projects must fall into at least one of the categories below: Low Gov’t.
