On July 4, 2026, St. George will join the rest of the nation to commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Communities will come together to reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans and look toward the future. America’s anniversary is an invitation for everyone to find ways to celebrate what brings us together. Members of the St. George City Council kicked off our observance of the upcoming anniversary during Saturday's Washington County Fair parade, sporting a new version of our City logo to observe this anniversary. 💗 Did you know that on the evening of April 18, 1775, Dr. Joseph Warren summoned Paul Revere and gave him the task of riding to Lexington, Massachusetts, with the news that British soldiers stationed in Boston were about to march into the countryside northwest of the town? The battles that ensued at Lexington and Concord the following day, April 19, 1775, are considered the start of the American Revolutionary War.

🌟 Great opportunity to have your stories recorded and preserved, forever! 💗 Utah Public Radio is partnering with StoryCorps, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of people from all backgrounds and beliefs, in St. George and Springdale, Utah from April 24 - May 23. Now in its 20th year, the StoryCorps Mobile Tour has facilitated thousands of meaningful conversations between people who know and care about one another. Reservations to record are available now, and can be made by calling StoryCorps’ 24-hour toll-free reservation line at 1-800-850-4406 or visiting storycorps.org or upr.org. Reservations are available now through May 23, with special dates for Springdale on May 6 and 7 at Zion Canyon Mesa. The StoryCorps airstream trailer will be parked in St. George at Vernon Worthen Park, between 200-300 South on 400 East. StoryCorps and Utah Public Radio will be available to answer questions throughout the recording event. This recording event will be the first opportunity since UPR sponsored the StoryCorps Mobile Tour in 2013 for southern Utah participants to do in-person StoryCorps interviews where two people record a meaningful conversation with one another about who they are, what they’ve learned in life, and how they want to be remembered. A trained StoryCorps facilitator guides them through the interview process. After each 40-minute recording session, participants receive a digital copy of their interview. With participant permission, a second copy is archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for future generations to hear. In St. George and Springdale, StoryCorps will partner with NPR affiliate Utah Public Radio/KUSU-FM. UPR will air a selection of interviews and create special programs around the project. StoryCorps may also share excerpts of these stories with the world through the project’s popular weekly NPR broadcasts, animated shorts, digital platforms and best-selling books. “Our partnership with StoryCorps represents what UPR does best: connecting and strengthening our communities through storytelling,” said Kerry Bringhurst, Station Co-Manager at UPR.

There have been some exciting fossil finds at what is being called the Substation Quarry Excavation. In fact earlier on Tuesday, a dinosaur tooth was found! 🦖 The upcoming construction for a new City power substation has proven to be a catalyst to retrieve fossils from this location just off Riverside Drive. While there had been no activity on this site prior to the announcement of the substation construction, the community — near and far — have teamed up to help extract these fossils before construction is due to begin sometime in May. It's been great to see the coordination and collaboration between the City and the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site. 💙 This is a fantastic partnership, and the City is happy to contribute to the preservation effort. 🌟
