  • ?? Elm Tree Tunnel Update ?? ?? The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 4 will remove 24 elm trees along the historic Beringer Winery Elm Tunnel in February 2025 due to age and disease. This action follows the 2021 Elm Tunnel Management Plan and is based on inspections conducted in June 2023 in collaboration with both Caltrans and the City of St. Helena. ?? As part of this effort, the St. Helena Beautification Foundation has been actively involved in the management plan and is contributing funds made possible by an annual donation from Beringer Winery. These funds will go toward the replacement of the diseased trees. Their support highlights the community’s commitment to preserving the historic character of the tunnel while ensuring its long-term health. ? Following the removal of the existing trees, new disease-resistant elms will be planted in or near the same locations to maintain the iconic appearance of the Elm Tunnel and promote its future sustainability. ?? The Elm Tunnel is a significant feature of the Beringer Winery Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a state-owned historical resource. Caltrans is ensuring that the project adheres to the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and as a result, this work has been determined to have no adverse effect on the district’s historic integrity. ?? While the City, Caltrans, and the St. Helena Beautification Foundation do not advocate for the removal of healthy trees, this action is being taken for the long-term health of the tunnel. It is important to note that while the land and trees are owned by Caltrans, the responsibility for maintenance is shared between Caltrans and the City of St. Helena. ? Both the City and Caltrans remain committed to balancing the preservation of the tunnel’s historic significance with proactive tree health management, ensuring the iconic Elm Tunnel will thrive for generations to come.
