Today we’re highlighting some of the dedicated veterans who work at the City of Shawnee. Customer Service Specialist Heather Inich comes from a family deeply rooted in military tradition. Inspired by the service of her father, brothers, and other family members, she enlisted in the Air Force right after high school. Heather’s military experience opened her eyes to the value of teamwork. One of her proudest achievements was when her training group was recognized as the Honor Flight—the highest award trainees can strive for. Heather has a simple message for anyone considering the military: "If you truly believe in your heart that it is what you should do, then do it.” We’re thankful for Heather’s belief that everyone, despite their differences, can come together to accomplish great things.
Today we’re highlighting some of the many veterans who work at the City of Shawnee. Shawnee Police Officer Nicole Maendele enlisted in the Army at 18 to explore the world beyond her Kansas roots. It opened doors to experiences she hadn’t imagined, including a deployment to Afghanistan and living abroad in Asia. She found joy and purpose in her role, developing a deep interest in international affairs. During her military career, Nicole witnessed the resilience of people living under difficult conditions. This experience developed an open-minded outlook that continues to shape her approach to life and work. Nicole considers the military an opportunity for growth, travel, and self-discovery. For people with dedication and drive, it can be an eye-opening way to experience the world. We’re grateful for Nicole’s commitment to serve, both in the military and here in Shawnee!
Many veterans work at the City of Shawnee, and in honor of Veterans Day, we’re highlighting a few of them. Doug Hemsath, GIS Manager for the City of Shawnee, was inspired to join the Marine Corps by his upbringing in a military family. Growing up on military bases during the Cold War, Doug developed a strong sense of duty to serve. At 20, he enlisted in Officer Candidate School and was later commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer. Doug’s four years on active duty shaped both his career and worldview. While stationed in Japan, Korea, and the Philippines, he encountered people from all walks of life, which deepened his appreciation for America’s freedoms and opportunities. Doug hopes others will find ways to learn, travel, and grow—whether in military or civilian life. We salute Doug’s dedication, both in the Marine Corps and in his current role at the City of Shawnee.
