Salem's annual Qing Ming Festival, or the Clear and Bright Festival, returns on Saturday, April 5, with an open house from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Salem Pioneer Cemetery. The festival is associated with honoring ancestors and celebrating the return of spring. It is also know as "tomb sweeping" day. The program will include dedication music from Willamette University students, a proclamation by Mayor Julie Hoy, speaker Russ Lowe from Salem's Chinese Community and Qing Ming offerings. Traditionally, family members made offerings of tea, wine and food. Families would then burn joss paper representing money that the spirits could use in the afterlife. Milan Davis, Salem's urban forester and parks maintenance supervisor reads the City's Arbor Day proclamation at Monday's Salem City Council meeting. He is joined by Parks Project Coordinator Tom Bradley, Park Maintenance Operators Nolan Rogers and Cesar Estrada, and Tree Trimmer Mike Tyler. "Our urban forest enhances our quality of life and helps to prepare us for a climate-altered future by providing cool shade on hot days, blocking cold winds in the winter, purifying our air, slowing down and cleaning our stormwater, absorbing and reducing noise pollution, and attracting birds and wildlife." Salem is a charter participant in the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program.

Salem Mayor Julie Hoy and Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator Beth Schmidt display the Chair's Choice Award presented to the Safe Routes to School partners, including the City of Salem, by the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments. "Everyone in this room made an impact on our schools and students," Ms. Schmidt said at Monday's Salem City Council Meeting. Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School serves as an advocate for pedestrian and bicycle safety throughout Salem.

Salem Public Art Commission will host a Slow Art Day event on Saturday, April 5, 11 a.m.-noon at the Salem Public Library. Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. https://www.slowartday.com Participants will meet at the front entrance desk and will be directed to a display of three paintings from the Salem Public Art Collection. They'll be given time to silently focus on each painting for 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, there will be an open discussion in front of the paints for viewers.
