The City of Prairie Village is located in Northeast Johnson County, Kansas with a population of over 21,000. The City of Prairie Village was originally the vision of the late J.C. Nichols. After the successful development of the Country Club Plaza area in Kansas City, Missouri, Mr. Nichols turned his company’s direction and development toward his native Johnson County just a few miles from the Plaza. He had visions of transforming the rolling hills into a well-planned community of beautiful homes and neighborhood shopping centers. Construction in Prairie Village started in 1941 and by 1949 Mr. Nichols’ dream became reality when the City was named the best planned community in America by the National Association of Home Builders. During a 1-percent annual storm, Brush Creek overflows onto Mission Road, which is an arterial roadway. The City of Prairie Village, Kansas wanted to fix this issue and prevent the flooding of residences and roadways along Brush Creek. For this project, our team raised Mission Road up to four-feet and shifted the roadway 12 feet towards Brush Creek. We added new storm sewers and regraded Brush Creek to improve flow capacity. With these changes, residents' homes and drivers are protected.

In celebration of the hard work and dedication of public works employees, Mayor Eric Mikkelson formally designated this week as National Public Works Week. Most, but not all, of our team wear bright orange shirts. If you see one of them out on a job site, stop by to thank them. #NPWW #publicworks

This was certainly better than yesterday when public works employees "celebrated" the start of National Public Works Week with trees and limbs down from an overnight storm. #NPWW
The City of Prairie Village Public Works Department celebrated National Public Works Week with a delicious breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and TANG!!!!! A huge shout out to Erica Price at Chris Cakes for serving us this morning. #APWA #NPWW

City of Prairie Village began in 1941, when the Nichols Company acquired considerable acreage along both sides of Mission Road and Tomahawk Road to provide expansion for the Country Club District areas of Indian Hills and Sagamore Hills, which were extending west from State Line and along Tomahawk Road. Today, the major area of Prairie Village is in eight residential subdivisions and two business districts developed by J.C. Nichols Company over a 20 year span. The name “Prairie Village” was selected by the Nichols Company for the first grouping of homes and over the years, this name has become the identification for the whole. You can't say the City of Prairie Village doesn't have heart! WE ARE KANSAS CITY, by artists Anna Bethelsen and Kaitlyn Ekart-Eliot, is now on display along Mission Road in front of the Prairie Village Municipal Complex. From the Parade of Hearts website: "This heart design embodies gestalt, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The front side symbolizes the collective impact of the Kansas City community, while the back side represents individual influences. Through a mirrored mosaic, Kansas Citians can engage with the art to see themselves as integral to the city’s diverse and cultural tapestry." The Parade of Hearts is a public art experience that celebrates our diversity, unites communities and supports nonprofits by placing beautifully designed hearts by local artists throughout the Kansas City region. Thank you to the Prairie Village Arts Council for submitting the competitive application that secured Prairie Village as a host location! Learn more about this celebration of the HEARTland at www.theparadeofhearts.com.
