Today, we are celebrating the 26 years of service of Ground Maintenance Technician Greg Cramer, who began working for the City part-time as a young man. He returned to the City full-time in 1998 and has earned the reputation of being detail-oriented and skilled in his work. While working in District 3, Greg was tasked with maintaining our most high-profile areas; mowing, spraying, and trimming trees at our community centers, library, and pools. Greg is most content when performing the hard, physical work. He could often be found out in the elements, happily using a walk-behind snowblower, a trimmer, or a chainsaw to provide a clean and aesthetic park for everyone to enjoy. Not only has Greg always been a fantastic worker, but he also brought a sense of playfulness to the District 3 shop. He worked well with his coworkers and put the team above his own interests. Greg’s presence will surely be missed, but we congratulate him on a job well done and wish him well in retirement!

Our department is saying farewell to another long-time employee today, Paula Garcia. Paula started with the City part-time back in 1999 where she worked at Benson, Sherman, and Near North Community Centers. She returned to the City as a full-time Recreation Coordinator in 2009, overseeing Benson and Sherman Community Centers. After a while, she was moved to Florence Community Center and then finished her 15th year back at Benson Community Center. She loved her summers on the Sun Dawgs and Aquatics Teams. Some of her favorite moments with the department were her late-night basketball nights at Benson, spending time with the senior pool players at Florence, and being chosen to be grand marshall in the Benson Days Parade in 2024. She has left a lasting legacy within our department! Paula is looking forward to spending lots of time with her grandkids in retirement! We wish you the best! ??

Earlier this month, we said goodbye to Dennis Bryers, our longest-tenured employee. Joining our Department on July 6, 1993, Dennis has dedicated over 31 years of service to our team as a Park Planner II. You can imagine the wealth of knowledge, experience, and history he's built up during his time here. If you have ever visited the Koch Family Tennis Center, Dennis is the visionary who designed the entire facility from the ground up! That project is one of his most memorable during his time here. Another highlight of his career was being elected to the ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) Council of Fellows. The society was founded in 1899, and less than 1,500 landscape architects have been elected for that honor! Enjoy your retirement, Dennis, you deserve it! We love watching the progress of this project!
HAPPY HARD HAT HUMP DAY! Checking in on the progress happening at Mandan Park. As you can see a large portion of the framing is complete with the trusses currently being placed to top out the two-story nature center. We are looking forward to the roofing and exterior cladding work to begin. Pact Studios is working with the City of Omaha Park, Recreation, and Public Property Department to design a new nature center and shelters for Mandan Park. The Mandan Park Nature Center and Shelters Project is intended to provide another location for the popular children's day camps here in Omaha. The Nature Center itself is a two-story building, comprised of a main level housing an assembly space, restrooms, staff offices and a food preparation area to support the day camp. The lower level includes a caretaker residence, storage space, mechanical space, and a storm shelter for the staff and children of the day camp. Adjacent to the Nature Center are a number of shelters tucked into the woods of Mandan Park. These open-air structures are meant to provide sheltered outdoor space for most of the activities held during the day camp.
