As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, we're shining a spotlight on some of the incredible women within our organization who inspire and lead every day. Join us as we share their stories, accomplishments, and the impact they've made, both professionally and personally. ? Ginger Blount-Moore serves as the Assistant City Manager for Community Wellbeing in the City of Newport News, Virginia, and is the first Black woman to serve in this role. She began her career with?the city's Department of Human Services in 2002 as an eligibility worker. In 2016, she was promoted to Deputy Director, providing administrative oversight and management for the department's programmatic operations. She was selected to serve as Director of the Newport News Human Services Department in January 2023.?She holds a bachelor’s degree in human resources administration and a master’s in management and leadership.? Ginger attended professional leadership development programs through the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Services at the University of Virginia and completed the National Forum for Black Public Administrators' Executive Leadership Institute.?She serves as the chairperson for the Community Policy and Management Team and Commission on Homelessness. She is a board member for the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board and Thrive Peninsula. She is also an active member of the Denbigh Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.?Ginger’s personal mission statement is very simple: “To serve and help those in need.” ? What advice do you have for parents who aspire to be in an executive leadership role? ? As parents, we often juggle many roles, add a leadership role or just working outside the home it can be challenging. For those who know me well know I don’t see challenges - only opportunities for growth, development, and resolution. I’d recommend parents view their aspirations as a growth opportunity for both them and their child(ren). As you are learning new skills, habits, and strategies for your career, equip your child with the right tools to increase their capacity for task initiation, time management skills and executive functions (organization, planning, communication). With the right amount of patience, consistency, and perseverance; parents can help their children develop strong self-regulation skills like teamwork, empathy, active listening, and conflict resolution, setting them up for success. By no means is this a one size fits all, even siblings will require varying approaches. It takes trial and error, a good dose of humility and a lot of grace; give it to yourself. #EmployeeSpotlight #WomensHistoryMonth #WomensHerstoryMonth #WomenInPublicService #womeninlocalgovernment

As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, we're shining a spotlight on some of incredible women within our organization who inspire and lead every day. Join us as we share their stories, accomplishments, and the impact they've made, both professionally and personally. Jen Cobb, PE is the Assistant Director for Newport News Waterworks in the City of Newport News, Virginia. She has 25 years of experience in the stormwater, drinking water, sanitary sewer, and solid waste fields in public and private sectors and is a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia. She holds a B.S. in Biological Systems Engineering and a Graduate Certificate in Local Government Management, both from Virginia Tech. She is a past Chair of the Virginia Water Environment Association’s (VWEA) Stormwater Committee, the current vice chair of the VWEA and the Virginia Section American Waterworks Association joint Utility Management Committee, and an active member of Water Environment Federation’s Leadership Institute Steering Committee. She has been married to the “best husband in the world” for 23 years with two teenagers, three cats, and a Great Dane. Her passions include water, wolves, and the color purple, while her hobbies include playing volleyball, cruising, and living life on the edge (whether jumping out of an airplane or staying sane while raising a family). What advice do you have for women looking to advance their career in STEM? Over my 25-year engineering career, I found the greatest resource is my network and relationships with others. One such form is finding a mentor and making yourself available to mentor others that have less or different experiences. Take the opportunity to collaborate and share stories with people outside your normal team, whether it’s someone in a different division, department, or organization while connecting at an industry-specific event. This type of connection resulted in me gaining knowledge that saved my previous workplace millions of dollars. As much as I may want to, and thought I did in my younger days, I will never have all the answers. #EmployeeSpotlight #WomensHistoryMonth #WomensHerstoryMonth #WomenInSTEM
