关于我们

The City of Myrtle Beach is “First in Service” The City of Myrtle Beach is a full-service resort at the heart of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of natural beauty on South Carolina's northeastern coast. Our 35,000 permanent residents and millions of visitors enjoy the wide beaches, the warm weather and an incredible range of entertainment, nightlife, golf, shopping, dining and live theater. Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957, when the permanent population first topped 5,000. By the way, the name "Myrtle Beach" comes from the wax myrtle, an abundant local shrub, and was chosen in a name-the-town contest in 1900. "Edgewater" finished in second place. Previously, the area had been known as Long Bay, Withers and New Town. For nearly 50 years, Myrtle Beach was a military town, first as home to the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 1940s, and then to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base beginning in the 1950s. The base closed in 1993, and the property has since been redeveloped as the Market Common District, complete with an urban town center known as The Market Common, a Grand Park that features open space, recreation fields, a large lake and a 1.1 mile walking and bicycling trail. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well-known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. The city's staff members are dedicated to being "First in Service," and we are ready to provide assistance and answer your questions at any time. For more information, please contact the Public Information Office at [email protected].

FIRST IN SERVICE FRIDAY Please help the City of Myrtle Beach congratulate JC Blackhurst as this week's First in Service Friday employee of the week! JC is the Parks Division Superintendent in the Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism Department. Originally from Ohio, JC worked as the director of parks for the City of East Liverpool before moving to Myrtle Beach in 2016. JC has been with the City of Myrtle Beach for six years and counting. He started his career here in field maintenance and was promoted to superintendent four years ago. JC worked as the turf manager for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans prior to working for the city. When asked what he likes most about his job, JC said, "the people (he) works with!" without hesitation. His nomination reads... "I would like to nominate JC Blackhurst in Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism (PRST) for First in Service Friday recognition. A few weeks ago, JC approached city management with an idea to have a cleanup event at Futrell Park using city employees as volunteers. The event was approved, and JC sent an email to all city employees inviting them to the event. On Friday, August 23, 2024, the event took place and there were volunteers from numerous city departments that participated. Volunteers picked up litter, cleaned playground equipment, trimmed, and cut trees and bushes, and removed a shopping cart and chair and ottoman from the pond. JC not only organized the event, but he was in a kayak in the pond collecting litter in addition to helping wherever it was needed. As the event was wrapping up, I was approached by an 85-year-old lady who lives in the area. She came to express her appreciation for all the volunteers. She told me when she moved to the area, she used to come down to the pond but lately has not come as much because of the condition. She told me she will be coming down to the park again because of how nice it looks again. This is all directly attributable to JC's efforts. I have attached a photograph of JC and this nice lady. While the above information is worthy of recognition itself, JC has quickly become a “go to” person for me when I need something taken care of in PRST, but particularly as it relates to trees and landscaping on city property. It does not matter the time or what he is doing, if I call JC I know whatever the issue is will be promptly addressed." Thank you, JC, for your hard work and always keeping our city beautiful. You are appreciated! #MyrtleBeach #CityofMyrtleBeach

"WE'VE SEEN A SIX YEAR LOW IN CRIME RATES" ?? Crime rates continue to trend down in Myrtle Beach as the permanent population and number of visitors coming to town are going up. Listen to Captain Chris Smith explain MBPD strategies proving that they are making a difference in our city. The Myrtle Beach Police Department's efforts are making a difference in citywide crime rates as Myrtle Beach continues to be a safer place for everyone. Captain Smith talks about changes in the department's strategies and partnerships over the years that've contributed to the continued decrease in overall crime, specifically at the waterfront. The MBPD presented this data during the City Council workshop Tuesday, October 1. Here are some highlights: - Citywide Part 1 crimes are down (A decrease in more than 1,500 reported incidents since 2019). - Waterfront nuisance calls are down by 42%. - "Proactive Policing," self-initiated calls and better visibility along high traffic areas like Ocean Boulevard are leading to an overall crime reduction. - Myrtle Beach's investment in the Real Time Crime citywide camera system and other technological advances are preventing crime and aiding in crimefighting efforts. - The SEVAP (Summer Emergency Vehicle Access Plan) along Ocean Boulevard has led to a 20 second decrease in waterfront response times. The report is generated from Myrtle Beach Police reports each year. FIRST IN SERVICE FRIDAY ?Please help the City of Myrtle Beach congratulate Cheryl Finkel as this week's First in Service Friday employee of the week! Cheryl has been a Victim Advocate for the City of Myrtle Beach for five years. Cheryl has been with the City of Myrtle Beach for 18 years. She began working in detentions, then transferred to her current role to pursue her passion for helping people. She spends her days helping victims of crimes get back on their feet, including finding housing and providing basic needs. Originally from Ohio, Cheryl moved to the area in 1998. She worked in loss prevention for years before she began with the city. On top of her tenure in public service, Cheryl also served in the United States Navy. Her favorite part of the job is helping people and being a voice for those who struggle. Her nomination reads... "I wanted to nominate Cheryl Finkel for First in Service Friday (riding on the heels of her husband, Greg Finkel, who received it earlier this year). Cheryl is not only a Victim Advocate, she is the Victim Advocate supervisor. She takes the time to make sure her team is always prepared and taken care of. She is also amazing at her job. I cannot tell you how many times I have walked down the hall to hear her on the phone with victim’s taking as much time as they need to tell their story and how a crime has impacted them. She is both empathetic and effective and is able to give a voice to victims in the courtroom. Cheryl exemplifies our First in Service motto." Thank you, Cheryl, for your First in Service commitment to our community. You are appreciated! #MyrtleBeach?#CityofMyrtleBeach
