MEMPHIS IS BLACK HISTORY??? On February 12, 1968, more than 1,300 Black sanitation workers went on strike to protest unsafe working conditions, low wages, and racial injustice. Their fight for dignity and fair pay became a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood with the workers, marching in solidarity as they carried the iconic “I AM A MAN” signs. The strike, met with police violence, lasted over two months before the city recognized the union and increased wages. This movement sparked a wave of African-American unionization across the South and remains a powerful symbol of the fight for economic and racial justice. Want to see the full exhibit?
