He was on scene of a house fire in Overland Park in 2011 that tragically killed an 8-year-old girl who was having a sleepover at her friend’s house. The home did not have a working smoke alarm. “Seeing her covered in soot and knowing that she was my daughter’s age, knowing that she didn’t survive, and finding out the homeowners didn’t have a working smoke alarm — it really affected me,” said Dave Little, Lenexa Fire Department Captain — Prevention Division. “If that hadn’t happened, I probably wouldn’t have considered going into prevention.” That tragic incident ignited a shift in Dave’s perspective on fire safety. “I didn’t know how old my smoke alarms were, and I didn’t have them in every bedroom,” he said. Lenexa is looked to as a leader in local government initiatives such as public safety, development issues, festivals, watershed management, and the use of technology. The city has a long history of sustainable practices and thoughtful planning, which enables the community to meet its current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

It is National Parks and Recreation Month! This year’s theme is “Where You Belong” celebrating the many ways park and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their communities by providing programming, essential services for all ages and abilities and safe, accessible spaces for people to build meaningful connections. The City of Lenexa Parks & Recreation Department is made up of about 70 full and part-time employees with an additional 400+ employees joining in the summer months.
