Combining his love for cycling with a passion for giving back, Rick Lawley and his cycling team have raised nearly $4 million for City of Hope since 2007. Every year, they ride 600 miles across California over the course of a week, a journey Rick takes in honor of five family members who’ve battled cancer. Through his cycling and fundraising, Rick had become very familiar with City of Hope. So, when he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, he knew exactly where to go. Of all the lessons Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., learned from his father, one piece of advice continues to drive him today: “Never forget your patients.” Now, as professor and chair of the Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research and the Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology at City of Hope, Dr. Salgia is at the forefront of City of Hope’s research efforts to find a cure for lung cancer. His vision, however, extends even further — and he's determined to turn these breakthroughs into a cure for all cancers.

This New Year’s Day, City of Hope patient Thom Mrozek will realize a lifelong dream: riding in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. He’ll be aboard the City of Hope float, alongside one of the people who helped save his life: oncologist Stephen J. Forman, M.D. In 2012, Thom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was caught early enough to be treated successfully. He went through major surgery and months of chemotherapy and beat the odds, remaining cancer free for 12 years, unheard of among pancreatic cancer patients, where the 10-year survival rate is only about 1%. On World Pancreatic Cancer Day, read his story of resilience and hope. https://lnkd.in/gux5VxzG

Known for its legacy as a garden campus, City of Hope dedicated a new, 1.65-acre park on its Duarte campus yesterday. The Ted Schwartz Family Hope & Healing Park is officially open and joins the Rose Garden, Argyros Garden and Japanese Garden as yet another tranquil space that offers patients and their families a peaceful sanctuary for reflection, respite and connection with nature. Named in honor of grateful patient and true City of Hope friend, Ted Schwartz, and his family – and in recognition of Ted’s transformative $20 million gift to accelerate blood cancer research – the park is an uplifting reminder of Ted’s courageous journey with lymphoma and his deep desire to help other cancer patients experience remission sooner. “I told [Dr. Rosen] if I get out of this thing, I’m going to come back and we’re going to do something really special to help people,” he says. “I told him we were going to cure this disease together.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/g3MJqMhQ
