City Sells Courthouse to BarrelHouse Brewing Co. On November 5, City Council Members unanimously approved the Disposition and Development Agreement (DDA) between the City and Esteem Land Company LLC (BarrelHouse Brewing Co.) and authorized City Manager Mario Cifuentez to complete the necessary documents to sell the Kings County Courthouse to the company. Barrelhouse representatives first expressed interest in acquiring the Courthouse in 2022 under an agreement that would give them ownership of the building while ensuring the City would preserve the building's historic integrity. The Courthouse was built in 1896 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, most suites in the Courthouse are vacant (one suite is leased currently) due to required repairs and ADA accessibility upgrades, which the City does not have the funding to do. A 2023 estimate suggests that up to $10,000,000 in private investment would be required to rehabilitate the courthouse. Given prevailing wage requirements and procurement regulations, the City’s costs would significantly exceed this estimate. Here's what Council Members told Barrelhouse Co-Owners Kevin Nickell and Jason Carvalho: "There's so many times that we've seen the can being kicked down the road. I believe we have the gold standard in a sense of a model business developer that loves our town, who wants to invest in our town, who is from the area, and that you are ready to make things happen." -Mayor Travis Paden "There's no doubt in my mind the success that can occur, just based on your track history, on the prior investments and things you've made, everything has been successful. And so I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be the same." -Vice Mayor Mark Kairis "Thank you for investing in Hanford. This is, in my opinion, amazing. I think this will be a great boon to the downtown. It's going to bring a lot more businesses to our downtown." - Council Member Martin Devine "We do need to do something with the Courthouse. Otherwise it's going to deteriorate more." -Council Member Lou Martinez Read more: https://lnkd.in/eSvg5ZMm
